rigSAVER

I have used a variant of Tom Hoffmanns uSAVER for rigging for some time now. I rebuilt it today. Originally I used 3 strand (6k MBS)and I have overloaded the hell out of it so I replaced it with handspliced 9/16's Husky Bull Rope (14k MBS). I am going to replace the Tenex (5k MBS) with 10mm TVP (10k mbs) which should give it a working load of over 1000lbs with a 10:1 safety factor.

By integrating the XRR it opens up all sorts of basket, equalized and other set-ups. The large ring is rated at over 25k MBS.

The rigSAVER is incredibly versatile, quick to deploy and has proven itself capable of handling pretty large rigging.

Thanks, went back and watched that video again. Artful/inspired use of rigging! I saw the Rig pulley and steel ring come into play in that video but maybe this single XRR was unused in that particular set up. If I missed something please let me know otherwise I will watch for whatever else is brought up in this thread.

At one time I wanted a Rig pulley on a Whoopie sling for lowering but now I think my three ring XRR terminal rigging point and a triple XRR Whoopie for adjustability in a terminal rigging point will cover what I need to do. This looks sleek and sexy, I’ll grant you that. Can you do something with it that I am missing or is not covered by the above pair of XRR slings?

Lookin good, Nick ...

1 - definitely the TVP. Stronger and abrasion resistance both.

2 - how are you doing retrieval? I'm guessing the Ptezl aluminum quicklink will pass the pinto and jam the XRR perfectly.

3 - remember to de-rate for the bite of your prusik. It's like working with a knot vs. a splice.

You're doing really interesting stuff pushing the pintos into dynamic rigging. I'd love to see some sort of history/compilation/summary of your drop and loading experience traced back to individual pulleys.

Keep up the good work, my man.

Pretty cool man, I want one too!

So, pardon me for not knowing this, but is there a retrieval ball that fits clean through the Rig but not through the XRR?

Petzl has an aluminum oval 7mm quicklink that will jam the XRR.. Then it turns vertical and slips nicely through the Pintos. Notice there is no spacer used in the pinto. The legs are spliced individually.

Luke used to carry this but I don't see it now. Maybe I missed it.

The XRR allows a different basket and equalization of multiple rigging points. For example in my winch video I could have used this sling to equalize both of the small crotches with just one tool.

Also for basket configuration a overhand knot, which passes quickly through the large steel ring, can on a bad day slip trough the RIG, but is very unlikely to get through the 28mm hole on the XRR using 1/2" rope.

Most often I found myself, with the old unit either setting it in choked configuration, making a cut (negative catch usually) then moving the system down by hand; or setting it in basket configuration moving down the tree making a few cuts and then pulling it out with the overhand knot. I have never needed to retrieve it from choked configuration but I have a quicklink that will do the job.

Truth be told I added the XRR, because I had it, its a cool piece of hardware and I saw the possibility of making it useful, it could probly be done without it.

Maybe Tom can post pic of a uSAVER in equalized config and you will see what I am taking about regarding equalizing the rigging point.

I will do the TVP today, you gave me the measurements for the 8mm stuff, mind sending me any notes on the 10mm. I decided to use 10 because: I had already ordered it, and its stronger. COmparing it to the 3/8 tenex I already have, it should work the same and snatching a biner through it is still possible just takes some finesse.

As far as history compilation etc... I have been using the same RIG for a while now, and it has taken all sorts of abuse. I regularly inspect it and its still as rock solid and smooth as the day I got it. No shake, jangle, rattle or roll. I just blocked down an entire 20" black locust in 5' pieces yesterday, and that was on the 1/2" 3 strand body!

The video on this link is still private: U-SAVER prototype

Luke is working on a refined U-SAVER right now. The video is a working draft and the hardware pictured in the video is homemade, not professional production. There's still work to be done.

This video shows redundant and equalizing configurations for the U-SAVER. It contains a quick “video dictionary” of configurations. The same thing applies to Nick’s rigSAVER. It also shows the new retrieval technique using the quicklink.

Hope it’s useful.

Feel free to make two. Lol

You guys can all get one, just go to www.FREEsplicesbyNick.com LOL

Bud, Bix, if you guys want one just have the materials/hardware sent to me and I will do it up for you and ship it back. I enjoy it and am getting better and better as I do more.

With 6-7' of 10mmTVP, ~8' of 9/16" Husky, a Large XRR, the 3" Rigging Ring, and a Pinto RIG You are probly looking at $130 give or take.

I will throw in the Whipping and maybe some heatshrink. If you already have a RIG you can save $70 off of that.
