RigGuy cabling wire stops

Synthetic systems while having some advantages, also have some serious flaws. The two that concern me the most are:
1. The main reason (not only) I use cables is to protect people and property. I do not want to put anything in a tree that can easily fail and put the people and property I am being paid to protect at risk. In our area, grey squirrels will gnaw through synthetics.
2. To get the benefit from synthetics, the systems need to be inspected and adjusted. If they are not adjusted, they will girdle the tree. This sets up a potential liability for the arborist. It is a problem waiting to happen. It is the same reason I do not like gutters on my house. If you are not constantly looking after them, they clog up and set up a decay hazard to the house. The "default" setting if you do not do something there is a problem.

Rigguy- thanks for coming to the site and giving us some info straight from the horses mouth!

2 quick comments:

Maybe it's better to say "squirrels COULD gnaw through synthetics" and "if not inspected, the synthetics COULD girdle the tree?" As I understand it, all synthetic systems are designed to "grow" with the system, perhaps on their own.

And I think it's safe to say ALL systems should be regularly inspected.

I really like your wire stops and I can't wait to install them!!!

I always hear that there is no research for the wire stops, ai love them, thanks. When will university level studies be performed? What are you doing to get Wire stop language in the Z?

Nick,

When you say "COULD" it implies that it has never happend before.... An airplane COULD crash on a tree with cobra cable in it and there is a chance that it could fail....

I have seen more than 20 Synthetic systems damaged by gray squirrels... that puts it in a different area then "COULD"

I still install them though, there are trees that i think are better off with synthetics

1. Trees with owners that will pay you to do an annual inspection

2. Trees that have a potential of failing and are not showing signs of that failure yet

pretty much any other situation, i use wire stops... i have installed over 300 cables to date and I love the ease over taking a hacksaw up!

[/ QUOTE ]It would be very telling if you documented this. detter in germany said that there has only been one report of rodent predation. also, you have to define damaged--just a nick, or at least 10%, or...?

o and as for getting into ansi, it is all up to practitioners to send in comments, not just one guy...or two...

Guy- Germany doesn't have the grey squirrel. Maybe this should be taken into account when we talk about synthetics in the US.
