Rigging Rings - Build your own @ home

im looking to buy some XRRs in the near future and was wondering if anyone has tried setting them up kind of like the reverse of a Pulleysaver. instead of have a steel ring on the end of a length of line and a pulley/rings on a prusik, put a steel ring on a prusik and put the rigging ring thru the ring in a choked conifiguration.
Would is retrieve as smooth?
Does my discription even make sense?

Cut High,

I like that idea, and have thought of the setup myself but am unsure what advantage it would offer over the other way, rigging ring on the end and XRR on the prussick.

Is it 6 of one half dozen of the other? I dont necessarily see advantage/disadvantage either way. What do you think?

I guess from a retrieval standpoint the XRR would come through easier than a 3" ring... is that your direction?

CutHigh, I agree with Nick. I dont see much advantage to the set up (if I am understanding you correctly). The advantage of the pully saver is the eye (no ring) and the pully (less friction) and it cost a lot less the an ART. By adding a large steel rigging ring you are adding weight, and by nature the set up would only be a 1 ring rigging point. Also with the big ring you are looking at having another thing to hang up somewhere in the tree. If you check out the begining of the thread Nick and I both set up a pretty sweet retrievable set up. Both light, and easy to retrieve. I would look into something like those or similar.
I dont have a picture of the adjustable version I made with a big ring on the end of the rope and a small ring and prussic for adjustment. Allowing for internodal set up like a cambium saver.

i really like the setup you guys all made and i really envy your splicing skills. My lack of splicing ability is why i was thinking it would be easy to just buy a spliced XRR on a 7' sling and add the ring on a prusik.

I don't splice and it's not worth the time for me or most business owners to splice their own stuff.

It's an awesome skill and I'm sure fun and rewarding if you have the time.

Just buy the stable braid XRR sling (see attachment).

And buy a loop XRR or two for the prusik ring.

Loop XRR's.

ha, ha, just noticed something... not the best Loop pictures, when I was taking pictures the only loop slings I had on hand that day were broken ones from testing, I photo shopped the sling material around the rings again. Could have done it better, as it doesn't bulge that much around the small ring as it appear here, oh well.

well X , I have been splicing for twenty years , the rings are very good rigging tools . I told you once , I'll tell you again , you are the Lord of the Rings , they can't take that away from you , solid rigging tool and some people just like one stop shopping .

I still think it's so cool that when I talked to you about these rings, you told me you were rigging for years with a similar idea, just using steel clevis (2 of them, welded together for width).

You've been using the heck out of these XRR slings, glad you have them.

Just an update: I have been using this thing a lot lately. I really like it. It is quick, bomber, and easy on the rope. We have been negative blocking wood down on it, catching tops, etc. Working down the spar we were using like it a R/r friction saver with the rings spread apart like you would see working a spar down DRT. After making the cut we just spread the rings and slid it down 5 or 6 feet to make the next cut, once the piece is tied the tension keeps everything in place and once its caught it isnt going anywhere.

I tried to break them, then tried to break the rope using them, no luck! I havent set or retrieved from the ground yet (the way I have it set up you have to use the throwline for both, replacing the rigging line at the end with the throwline then removing the rings), but I dont think I would go with the small ring/big ring setup. The large rings offer increased bend radius and accommodate larger sling material. Considering the type of rigging we have been using it for so far I am glad I went with the 3/4's tenex.

It is especially great in the bucket!

I definitely exceeded my estimated 1000lb WLL. Both videos in the winch thread used this setup as the terminal point.

It has replaced block use for me since I started using it. I dont envision using a block anytime soon except for maybe the heaviest rigging.

This one is for a friend, I will call it the Redi-Rig. It wont be used with a pulley or a prusik. It uses the small XRR and the 2.5" pensafe ring. Its essentially a rigging oriented R/r friction saver. It can be set from the ground with a throwline or in the tree remotely using a rigging line. Retrieved with a simple overhand knot and designed for light rigging it should be a sleek, simple, effective tool for climbing and bucket prunes or small takedowns.

Used as a redirect for a rigging line, as long as the small ring is set on the 'up' side a ground man can tie a knot in the end of the line and the climber/cutter can easily pull the Redi-Rig back to themselves.

The 1/2 inch rope has a MBS of 9500 lbs.

Thanks Merle! I am really happy with how those came out. I have the Class 1 Double Braid down pat now I think. I did both of those and the lockstitch in 1.5 hours which is really fast for me... I have the NE Ropes instructions memorized but still use the print-out to double check the measurements.

Measuring everything takes longer I think than facilitating the actual splicing itself.

I ordered 50 some feet of that 1/2" rigging line so I will be working a few projects with it and having some test rigs sent out and broken.

Splicing tenex takes about as long as filing a big chainsaw

Bonner, why didn't you brummel one side? then the other bury would have been alot deeper.

You could also brummel one, and put the ring in a woopie loop.

No stitching required and done in 10min flat. :)

Only a few options and thoughts.
