retracting reels

My guess is that the industrial tool balancers are rated for many more cycles than we might find in a year of climbing. The cheaper ones might fatigue but they
re cheap enough to replace. Or update when some clever cove finds a new configuration

With the gammon reel, in my 40 years of experience with the reel, the string has been the weak link, because of how it wears at the plumb bob.
I can only remember one spring breaking, at the center attachment of the spring, where the spring steel is bent into a sharp reverse curve.

Man, this thread got long.
Just thought I would share what it inspired me to do.
I actually found this old CT on a job. It looks like a lawnmower got it. My company had been there three years before, so I'm guessing I know who lost it.
The spring is pretty broken in (about like the pantin) and I chopped the lock off.
I had this old chain-pull "key-bak" that I shortened the chain on and it is working wonderfully so far.

Replacing the chain with throw line would give a smooth action, and maybe a stronger pull. Even better is the kite harness line that Kevin gave a link to, pm me your address if you would like me to mail you a piece of it to try out.

I must have missed that in the couple of pages I skipped in the thread.
I'll go study real quick.

I just checked it out and it seems that we have a kite store in town. I think I'll just go check it out. Thanks for the offer though.

its on his Instagram. speaking of Instagram. there is now this. from notch made by Harken. which I was referring to earlier. I've had the pleasure of using this foot ascender for a while and its amazing. curious to rig one up with a knee tether.

Very cool. Harken the winch people? There is a double cam thing very much like that on a little sailboat I took apart last year.

I think I might break it. I broke the stryder. I'm going to buy one anyway.

I did some testing of all the various ascenders I have kicking around. Learned some interesting things. My OG pantin with no strapping that I am using for my knee ascender won overall. It is old and the spring soft and the strapping removed makes a difference. I weighed them, converted to Newtons, measured the force required to drag up a new Allgear 11.7 double braid. I also realized that there is more to it than frictional drag at the cam. It also has to do with how well the ascender fairleads into the cam.
