rescue practice question

When you are practicing a pick off rescue (saying you do pick offs), do you ever consider the "what if" your descent control failed on you with patient and you now had to get off that and back onto another? Of course this is saying you haven't fallen and your just flat locked up. More of an SRT question really.

Ideally 2 ropes are used for pick offs.

A loop of prusik cord could be used to back up the lowering device set your weight on that then reset or incorporate another descent device. A miniature mechanical advantage system could possibly come in handy to unload the descender.

Not sure a rescue 8 or breaker bar rack will "lock up" too easily however.

What is the descender?

This is what I use as a 'pick off' rig. It's set-up and ready to be installed on a single or doubled rope, in the "rescue bag". I've picked off a 220 lb climber, with gear, by pulling with both hands. If a rescuer is not capable by using both hands, the rope is long enough to use a foot ascender.
Notice at the bottom, a single micro-grab and a double micro-grab.

As stated, every rescue should have the rescuer on 1 rope and the victim on another.

I have a similar set-up. One question: How long is the static line we see in the picture?

Which gives you 8.3' of lift and lower?

It's used as a "pick-off" system only. Pick off of one system and transfer to another.
It's for life support only. I have another 5 to 1 set up for rigging with 2.5 inch double pulleys.

Norm,

One more question for you: What are your thoughts about using an endless loop prusik instead of rope grabs at the lower end of the system. And how about protraxion vs grigri?

Just curious about your choices, advantages/disadvantages etc. Obviously there are many ways to achieve the same result.

Happy Thanksgiving.

A protraxion would be more efficient but wouldnt allow a controlled lower.

Correct. I was asking about both ends. Norm said pick off only and that is why I asked the leading question. I like being able to lift and lower with one prerigged setup too. There are several options where you incorporate the lowering ability into the system. What do you use Nick, sorry about the luck comment, I was just trying to make a point. I owe you a beer.

I like the Grigri, as it captures progress and has the ability to lower. Just my preference. I know there are other choices.
