Replacing the spikes on the Geckos

Hey guys and gals, Dad just bought the American Style spikes to replace the European style he currently has. The only problem is, the bolts that secure the spike to the leg iron are on so tight we bent the tool trying to remove them. Has anyone else experienced this? We oringally bought the Gecko's from Sherrill two or three years ago, and just bought the new American style spike to put on.

Any help on fixing this issue anyone?? We were going to call and ask Sherrill come Tuesday.

Sounds like the bolts may be secured with removable loc-tite. Try heating them up first?

Beau, $227 ain't cheap for cuffs! Can't you buy a whole complete set of gecko's right now for $299 on sale from Sherrill?

Hi rangerdanger,

When I made the exact same swap, the fasteners were just countersunk Allen head bolts.

If that's what you're up against, I hope you're not trying to use those L-shaped Allen keys. They are good for assembling Ikea furniture and that's about it.

Got a half-inch ratchet driver? Buy the appropriate sized stubby Allen socket head, clamp the Geckos in a bench vise, protecting the jaws with pieces of wood, and you'll power those out with ease.

Tip: Clean the interior sufaces of the Allen head bolt first, then place the stubby Allen socket in place without the ratchet head attached. With a plastic mallet or small hammer, give the socket a sharp rap to set the bite, then attach the socket driver or ratchet.
