"Refurbish" Spliced Hitches

\"Refurbish\" Spliced Hitches

I wanted to see if anyone has been "refurbishing" their spliced eye and eye hitches.

I have an HRC hitch that I spliced up about 2 months ago that needed some attention. My whipping was coming undone and was somewhat beat up and the MaxiDip on my eyes was wearing off a little and starting to pick (like an undipped eye would). I ended up removing and re-whipping the cover on and also re-dipped the eyes in MaxiDip. Nothing wrong with putting a second coat on is there? While I had the whipping off, i was able to inspect the core for wear and tear and also make sure it wasnt broken in half like someone mentioned in a current forum.

I also had an idea of replacing the cover on hitches. Say you've really worn the cover or maybe it just needs to be replaced (pine pitch on it), anyone think it would be okay to slip the old cover off and put on a new one (if you had extra cover from a previous splice or just short pieces of unused rope around)?

Just curious to see what everyone is doing to make their splices and hitches last longer!

Well I guess im being cheap but just trying to save a little money. Also theres 5 guys on the crew and its amazing how fast a 100ft hank of HRC goes.

Re: \"Refurbish\" Spliced Hitches

If you can get one of the eyes to pull through the new cover then go for it. Gives you a chance to inspect the material and use up some of the excess cover you have after splicing a few hitches.
The eyes on some of mine fit fine but others won't pull through the cover.

Re: \"Refurbish\" Spliced Hitches

Yeah Blinky I normally take the cover off when Im splicing them originally so I think I should be able to get the old off and the new on fairly easy.

Re: \"Refurbish\" Spliced Hitches

I have one eye-eye sling that has been redipped about 6 times. I finally just retired/replaced it a few months ago. It was used for YEARS. I'm break testing it to see how much strength is still in it.

But to answer your question, there's no harm in adding more protection to your ropes. It's sorta fun!
