red oak

Can anybody tell me what causes this in red oaks or scarlet oaks...Also a deformation in the branch collar. Seems to keep building layers appon layers , rather than callousing over.

Thanks
Greg

don't know; growth response ot foreign object or wound? My guess isthat as the burl forms, that part of the tree will become the strongest part of all.

no sign of pest from here.
