red maple loosing leaves

I have a red maple (omaha nebraska) that is 2 1/2 about 15 feet tall, beautiful. Currently its top leaves are turning sickly yellow, and they are falling off. What is the problem. I think I may have watered too much. It sits in clay soil, and we have gotten alot of rain, in addition to my extra watering. (Im dumb). What can I do to revive this tree, or is it something else.

Stop watering it yesterday......You have drowned the tree so no more water until the clay dries out. Plus you may have some root issues with the tree as well.
