Rear mount crane question

For those of you who have or have used rear mounted cranes, what type of protection has there been for the operator?

I ask this because we are in the process of getting our new rear mount crane. They are putting the crane on a new chassis in the next few weeks. My understanding is that they are not going to be building a headache rack for the cab of the truck or any protection for the operator.

I am just curious as to what others are doing or have seen.

Thanks for the time.

When i can't reach w/my knuckleboom (anything past 100 foot radius) i rent out my friends 90 ton terex rear mount. I always have the same concern for the oprtr.! A small piece of deadwood could break off and go right through the glass to the oprtr!!! This is another huge advantage of radio remote controls! (oprtr. can position themselves way out of the way) I would definately want some kind of steel bars or mesh or something over the oprtr. for tree work if it were my rig. I wouldn't need a cab protector for a crane (only for a bucket truck where you're cutting and dropping) Iuse my crane like this w/a man basket for some pruning jobs. The volvo cab and thick fiberglass hood are tough and held up well to a once a month smack from 2 inch deadwood. (the same size branches broke fenders and dented the cab on my old gmc) What kind of crane (size and cap. etc.)?

Mike it is a National 26 ton. 103' main boom plus 44' jib.

Are you planing on carrying any logs on the chassis? If so, you need to have a rack between the shifting load and the cab even if the logs are strapped down.

A sheriff stopped me once and tagged me for this issue. When I looked up the Federal DOT reg that he cited me on I found that my truck complied. The judge agreed with me and tossed out the $400 fine.

I got pulled over a month ago in our crane by the state police for a overall vechicle inspection. I've never had such a thorough examination of a vechicle by the state before. He had me there for a little more than an hour. He even broke out the creeper rolling underneath the truck everwhere. I had some logs on the deck from the day before with straps holding them down, but they must haved settled alittle, thus were a little loose. He commented on the loose steaps, my cripping didn't have a strap over them, and any time I transport raw material(he called it) should have log bunks in place. After all that he just gave me a warning, not to bad.

Sounds like a decent chap Never happen in MN
DOT Officer U_____ on the west side of MPLS would of took 2 hours and wrote an unsafe load ticket. I think he prides himself on writing tickets not warnings. Once I Didn't have a Fire extinquisher screwed down yet on a brand new truck, . . ticket . . he smiles . . P R I K
