Sorry for the shamles stealing from another board but this takes the cake.
And no this is NOT me (i hate poulan).
These two are lucky to be alive.
I had to take out what I figured was a 120' poplar on my property. The top 20' was rotted and fell off about a year ago plus the bottom of the trunk had split so it was only a matter of time. This bad boy was about 42" diameter at the base, the biggest tree I had ever cut, plus to top it off it was leaning the wrong way. All I had was a backhoe, a 20" Poulan and a bunch of chains to take it down.
Already cut out the birdsmouth and wrapping a chain around it.
So we had 60' of chains and 32' of nylon straps to hook to the tree which meant that my backhoe was in the 120' fall radius. Not good! I had seen a 60' locust tree fall on a junk car at my neighbors and it crushed it like a beer can.
I was figuring on the direction of the birdsmouth I cut and putting the backhoe off at an angle so the tree wouldn't fall on it......plus a lot of luck! I also had my father-in-law, who would be putting the tension on the tree, practice how fast he could jump out and run like a motherfu(EDITED)
With the tree under tension, I started backcutting it. I skipped the hardhat because if any one of the branches fell, it would hit me and shove my head down between my shoulder blades so what was the point? Plus I made sure there were no rotten branches up above and had my father-in-law spotting for me.
Here you can see the tree is leaning to the right and I wanted it to fall to the left. Plus with me there for scale, you can see the size of the mofo. I was slightly nervous.
It's on its way.
Success! The fu(EDITED) fell just how I had hoped. If it had fell on the backhoe, that part of the trunk was still about 12" in diameter and would have put one hell of a crimp in my sheet metal. Plus I'd have had to get a new father-in-law.
P.S. He's Canadian and all Canadians are natural born lumberjacks so I was never too worried. Also he said he wanted to cut the tree up to make a bunch of hockeysticks.
I worked the [censored] out of that 20" Poulan. Comparing the blade on it to the trunk you can see it took quite a bit to carve through.
Nothing left to do but burn it up and have a beer.
