Rave: leg scabbard straps

I use a silky Zubat handsaw and mount it on my leg. I used to use 1"webbing straps with buckles. They worked pretty well but eventually the saw would rotate a little or the strap would move and put the bucket on my shin bone. I was on the hunt for something better. I like to try to use stuff I have lying around when possible so I was trying to think of what straps I have tucked away. Then it dawned on me. I had purchased some resistance bands for stretches and light duty exercising.

The kit came with ankle straps. I wasn't using them so dug them out and they fit really nice and snug in the Zubat scabbard. They are padded and have plenty of Velcro to keep it secured. I've been using them for a while now and I'm so sold I'll be seeking them out again if I need to replace them. Only thing is they have this metal loop to connect the resistance bands. You could grind it off if you wanted but I just left em on. What's two more shiny things on me gonna hurt? Plus it's another place I can temporarily clip something if I'm in a weird spot.

I got something very similar but doesn’t have a cinch on it, just wrap around Velcro with some soft squishy neoprene padding. I was monkeying around with it trying to do a bungee-less knee ascender. For that, the little metal loop was handy. Still wouldn’t stay put well and I’m back to bungees.

Huh...I just bought a SAKA and was gonna try to do a bungeeless setup. Hadn't thought to try these. The cinch is top notch. Snug and secure.

I had played around with elastic cord and straps etc. but settled some years ago on 2" wide industrial velcro strap/ tape. Just used two pieces back to back for each strap, cut or tapered the corners off a bit and used shoo goo for a half inch on the "tab/ end" portion so I could get the things open more easily. I've climbed with these for four or five years now and this is still my trusty friend, even over my right spur when I'm climbing with spurs for removals. Tried clipping scabbard to my harness but much prefer this (maybe cuz used to carry a dive knife on my right calf so it's just habit - dunno).
Clean the inevitable wood chip accumulation off every so often with a small wire brush used gently to keep 'em "hooky".
Cheers.
