Rain, Rain, Rain, Rain,Rain...more Blasted RAIN

So, at what point during a rainy day, or under what conditions, do most of you all say "No Climbing Today" due to rain?

I know rain makes me very miserable and when I'm miserable I get cranky and cranky leads to stoooopidity on the job site. No need to subject my people to that.

Anyhow, how do you guys decide to call it quits for the day or, for that matter, not even head out and get started?

Depends on the job... small trees?, big trees?, species, access, temperature, etc. But mostly depends on my mood.
I can honestly say, if I can avoid it, I will. But sometimes you gotta get things done.

As far as when to pack up when on the job and caught in it, again dpends on the job. Some jobs you could feasibly return to finish another day, while others you cannot.

I have work to do at the office when raining...... /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When being in the office i call up the guys to boss them around and get them out the vans to do WORK /forum/images/graemlins/mad.gif. They didnt get raincoats for the weekend fishing trips /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

Hahaha, no when raining ill go out to be an example and the guys have to follow. There is enough work to do that can in rain, so risky jobs or some private clients we skip on rain days.

We've been experimenting with chainsaw carving.....the ARK is almost done! /forum/images/graemlins/drowninga.gifWe might need an ice breaker tommrrow. /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I actually look for bucket work or small trees to do. Soon Ill have a shop done and will do equip. work or training for newer guys. I think it will be an oportune time for that.

I try to have training days for my guys lined up ie. EHAP, first aid, CPR, and any training videos that i might have.... just so nobody gets sent home without any hours.... the flipside of that, is we can log some great hours learning how to step up production and minimize accidents.
we have a lot of fun on the days that we don't even leave the shop because of rain.

If we start a job and the rain is not too heavey will will continue. If its rain gets heavy we will wait for a break. Otherwise we will do equipment maintenance at the garage or take the day off. The risk of injury is too great during wet weather to risk working in.

in this area (vancouver BC) we wouldn't get a lot done if we shut down for rain. the only jobs that get cancelled due to rain are those that have drag paths that will be too muddy to go on. that said it doesn't often really pour here, more light rain than anything. of course my idea of 'light rain' is likely a little skewed. :D

Re: Rain, Rain, Rain, Rain,Rain...more Blasted RAI

Gord, light rain here is about a storm in some places. but I agree with you, I work unless its absolutely disgusting out, cant really avoid it for too long normally. We have had a pretty decent fall so far though.

We wouldn't work much here in Munich if we waited for sun. When it is wet, things just go slower and more careful. What I hate the most is all of the wet gear that smell like an old wet laborador.

I freakin hate rain and snow.

In the Pacific northwest it feels like it rains more often than not. You work no matter what the weather does. This is why even though it doesnt get very cold here its tough to work outdoors. In the Willamette Valley two years ago it rained 34 days straight, never once a sunbreak or dry period. But the summers are awesome.

Wet gear on the following day is the worst part to me. /forum/images/graemlins/squint.gif

I've never seen gear wet the next day that was set out the night before with a fan blowing on it.

That's a weird sentence structure, eh? /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Every year after a long hot summer & fall we have our first rain. Every year the first working day it rains it seems like it would be impossible to work out there. Unsafe, wet, slippery, wet ropes and gear...
The funny thing is, after the second day we work out in the rain. In fact, the town would have to be under 10 feet of water to hold us back. Partly because we all have bills to pay!
Seems almost like a superstition or something to take the first day of rain off

I do it mainly because I don't get paid to stay home.

It is too cold here for me in Jan and Feb so I go somewhere warm and the money from those rain days takes you a long way on a beach in Thailand. /forum/images/graemlins/pirate.gif
