Radiator

I have an older 250 Bandit chipper...seems to be some dust build up in radiator....what method does everybody use to clean it out?...water?...air?...thanks

Air twice a day (morning and lunch) also put a piece of window screen over the radiator itself to keep out larger debris. When ours gets really bad we use an acid that is made for cleaning condenser coils-I can't remember the name off hand, but I'll post it when I can take a pic of the bottle. Most air guns are poop for cleaning chipper radiators, so we normally"upgrade" ours by fabricating a new longer tip out of brake line -it works way better.

Power wash then blow dry with back pack. You need to have some sort of screen though too. That will really help even with the smaller stuff. Also make sure if possible your not fly chipping a pile and the wind is blowing the shit right into the radiator

You need an easily removable screen that can be blown or rinsed off as often as needed.

Also, dull chipper knives make a lot more dust.

Go to Home Depot /Lowes/whatever and get a screen kit that will fit the dimensions of the radiator grille. You can buy 4 tabs to mount it to the outside with sheet metal screws -all for less than $20.

I don't know what to call it, but the guy I work for on my day job has a older morbark with a 4cy cummins. The radiator needed to be replaced a few years ago. He went to a radiator shop and they hooked him up with one which has thicker fins that are about 1/8 X 5/16 grid, the finer dust just gets sucked right through and the screen blocks the leaf fragments which just fall off in transit. The "screen" is just 1/2in expanded steel.

Just a quick search and I found that you can buy radiators by "fins per inch"

Evo, so you must be able to see a lot of daylight or fan blades through the radiator fins right. Mine are so fine and tight I can barely see through even with my eyes lined up level to fins. Great radiator source by the way. I just blew mine out with air, water, then water and air. Finally I had to use a zip tie to run back and forth between a lot of the fins and blow again.

Trevor B, I always love seeing your solution oriented posts. When I or anyone I know is looking for an answer to an equip problem I will be checking in with you.

When i had the rotted out radiator on a chipper recored the shop put in one with larger holes between the fins. There was probably enough room to put a pencil lead between the fins and tubes. The shop assured me that I didn't compromise cooling capacity. On hotter days i'd watch the temp gauge and it held steady at the right temp.

I asked the reps from the chipper companies when i was at Expo the next year why they didn't put in the coarse cores. None of them came up with a reason that made sense to me.

In fact, almost never needed to clean out the radiator. What i found was that the corners would collect a little dust. That was where the pull of the fan wasn't powerful enough to take care of the dust/fines. A quick blast of hose water or air would keep it clean. With the larger air gaps it was easy to se if the radiator was clean. With the original fins it was almost impossible to see if it was clean at any time.

On one of my chippers...I think it was the Vermeer with vertical infeed wheels...1250???...the fan was a blower. It pushed air from the engine towards the tongue. The theory was that space was a little less 'polluted' with dust etc. That makes a lot of sense to me!

Ohhhh...another related consideration.

If you're going through the effort to have the radiator recored replace all of the anti-vibration mounts. They tear and break.

On almost every vehicle I;ve owned it seems like the heater core and radiator are the first thing mounted on the frame then the rest of the machine is assembled around them! Going in once is bad enough, not replacing all of th wear parts never paid off for me. Lesson learned.

Yeah, on my fins it was hard to even see well. I kept thinking it was done and then when I got up and looked from another angle I would see other plugged areas.

I'm going to get bigger fin spaces if/when my next radiator goes bad.
