Question about us who aren't ISA certified yet

Question about us who aren\'t ISA certified yet

Just wondering what the correct thing to tell people is when they ask what I do for a living. Am I still considered an arborist even though I am not yet certified? Or am I just a tree climber? I don't want to be misleading or just plain give false information if that is incorrect.

Re: Question about us who aren\'t ISA certified yet

The only thing that you can't call yourself is a 'Certified Arborist' with the CA in caps. That's trademarked by the ISA and means that the person has passed the tests. You could self-certify and call yourself a certified arborist or whatever. Of course, thats cheesy to say the least.

Tell your clients that you're an arborist.

Alex Shigo said something to the effect that the arbo profession will have 'made it' when all of the yellow pages had a listing in the A-for arborist instead of everyone being lumped into 'Tree Service'. that would mean that the consumers knew the difference. This did happen in some markets already.

Awesome Tom, thank you. I am proud to consider myself an arborist but just didn't want to be misleading like I said. I strive to be the best I can and ISA certification is my main goal hopefully within the next few years.

In ANSI A300, "Arborist trainee" is sometimes used, depending on the task.

And Tom, I've seen a listing for Arborist in a lot of YPs.
