Proximity to the lowering device

That training protocol carried forward as the gear improved over the years.
there have been a few improvements in technique and associated equipment since then

I accounted for change in my reply. The basic protocols of staying away from the friction point and drop zone are just as sound now as they were when Marv was teaching me then.

maybe your rigging game hasn't changed much in the last 40 years, but speak for yourself.

Staying close to the porty is faster and more efficient and allows more control.... as long as the porty isn't in the LZ the place to stand is right next to it. You just haven't figured out how to set the rigging up to make that work.

the further you stand from the lowering device, the more rope weight the rigged piece has to pull through the lowering device. so i say it depends on the situation. i see no difference in one’s ability to run the rope (no matter where they stand) as long as the friction is applied correctly. that said, i feel like standing close is unsafe a majority of the time.
