Product Recall DMM Compact Swivel Units

From the picture of the broken unit, it looks like it simply unscrewed. If that’s the case, making a change to cure that should not be difficult. Simply cross drill the screw, and push in a friction pin. Problem solved, it can no longer come apart.
For sure, but if it's that simple, how had they not thought about this years ago...........

I’m wondering, he says the threads stripped out, but DMM says the swivel unscrewed so which one happened? Because if it unscrewed, I would think you’d have a little warning -a gap would develop. Also, how did they solve the problem so quickly that the new ones their manufacturing won’t have the issue?
My GUESS, is there is a little set screw behind the white plastic plug. This probably jams into the threads or into a hole, if you look at the threads in the photo they are buggard only in one little location.. so something sheared or stripped, then the bold unscrewed?

The plastic cap is a grease port according to Taylor Hammel

I’m trying to see if they will just keep the thing, and send me a few carabiners or something equal value. Just really don’t want them to fix something I likely wouldn’t use.

I immediately sent them an email back saying exactly that. I bet that if everyone who feels that way writes them, they'll hear us.

So . . . got the update email from DMM as well this morning, which directs customer to do partial disassembly of the units and send them back buncha parts which they will replace (as in AT's picture above). Then you can reassemble new ones. On one of the swivels I have, the tiny "locking" screw stripped out and I can't seem to get it out. I am of the mind that I'm going to just send them the whole shebang and they can replace the whole units (or not). Not in the mood to fiddle anymore. Also I raised another issue with them - are they going to send another little plastic lined nut as a replacement - if memory serves, these can only be used once (or is it twice) before they have to be replaced when you put stuff back together anyway. Seems a bit strange to just not replace the whole darn unit and be done with it. Kinda disappointed actually. No response from DMM as of this writing.

Does everyone who buys one of these swivels necessarily disassemble the shackle to install it for whatever usage? I think the answer is no. Seems risky for DMM to rely on end users to disassemble and properly reassemble the shackle. Someone could screw it up. Or unscrew it up. If an accident occurs due to an end user's inability to properly reassemble the shackle, I'd hate to be a defense attorney for DMM.

I was thinking this exact same thing. How many more failures are likely due to Loctite being left out of the equation? They have a third party handling the shipment and return of the units to their factory also. Seems like a fraught process to me. In my mind, what they should do is to just send us brand new units that have the issue already addressed and then fix the ones that are returned and sell them at a heavy discount as reconditioned.

I simply don't want any swivels, for any purpose, in the foreseeable future. I only had one on my bridge and one on my lanyard. I took the one off of my bridge because it wasn't actually doing anything for me there, and I decided to add a second bridge cord, which wouldn't fit through the swivel anyway.
So, I was already trying to find a use for one as of three weeks prior to the recall. I still don't have a use for it.

I'm really surprised by this email. They're already taking a total bath with this situation, can't believe they would turn it into "send us the partially disassembled unit, we will "fix" it, and send it back in a few months".... My first thought when this all happened was that they would just send out new units and pay for return shipping of the old ones... my lanyard swivel is from April of 2020, a well-used and worn piece of gear at this point to be shipping back for repairs... Anyway, I've already replaced it, so if this DMM one ever gets back to me it will just sit there in my pile of bits and bobs......

Yea, that's another excellent point. How can they claim to be making them safe to use when they're all gonna arrive in various stages of worn out. They're only aluminum after all. If I ever get another swivel, I will want a steel one. This seems to present the same legal challenges that splicing used ropes does. This all seems so poorly thought through, it's a bit embarrassing.
