problem with The Glide

Today I was climbing in a Glide saddle and one of the leg straps popped open.

I remember that someone else had this happen and contacted Buckingham, but I don't remember the reading about the outcome. Have the buckles on the newer models been changed? Did you keep the saddle?

The adjustment straps on all of the buckles seem also to loosen easily. Anyone else find this to be a problem?

Has anyone else climbed with Saddle X? What are people's experiences with that saddle?

Mahk,

When I was at the Rocky Mtn. TCC on Sat. one of the Glide climbers described the leg loops as "self-adjusting" Not a desireable feature. I think that the fix for the buckles was to keep them lubed...WD40, silicone, your choice.

I've spent a bit of time in the X. Some nice features. The consensus from the X-climbers is that the waist belt is too wide at the hips. It limits the range of movement sometimes. Kind of like having a short stove pipe on. If the waistbelt could be trimmed it would be great. The double-adjustment on the front seems to be nice. At times you might want to be more vertical or laid back. If there is a second generation X they should have these things worked out. No word on that though.

Mark C. had the second gen B'fly at the SSA conference. Not any huge changes. This one will pass US standards. Unless someone else comes up with another saddle in the mean time it will be big seller.

Hi Tom

I agree with your comments on Butterfly II. It has a replaceable bridge which is a the ART butt set with a sheathed protector & the leg loops are a little wider. Apart from these changes it looks & feels like the same harness to me.

To those who are interested there will be at least 2 harnesses coming from euroland this year. One is completely new & the second is an upgrade. Personally I'd wait & spend my money on a new harness. The butterfly is the best of its type purely because there has (until recently) been nothing else of that type.

Hey Tod

I think you almost heard it all. Forgot to mention it's now olive green & red in colour! If you use the ART butt-set already then there is no big change. As I said, the webbing on the leg loops are a little wider so they don't cut in as they did before.

That's about the shape of it as I can see!!?

Craig;

Thanks for the link. That's what I was looking for.

I called B'ham and they said to send the saddle to them and they will investigate and upgrade as needed.

Tom;

It may be that I am the minority opinion on this, but, although the back support of the X is wider than that of other saddles, I haven't found that it restricts my movement. At times, such as when blocking down or craning out big wood, I find that it is more comfortable than a narrow back pad.

I have seen the same problem occur with a co-workers saddle, and he simply sent the saddle back to Buckingham and request a grommet buckle for the waist and the Master style clips for the leg straps. He hasn't had a problem since.

Mahk,

The backpad seems OK and like you say, for takedowns, a plus. The part of the saddle from below the side d-ring and forward could be shaved down a little to allow more leg rotation. It would probably be pretty easy to cut off the saddle and have the edge sewn with some nice flat webbing.
