Problem with my Bandit autofeed

I'm hoping this is the appropriate forum to post this but my autofeed is malfunctioning in my 2006 bandit 200. I think it is a stuck solonoid (spelling) valve. Either that or the digital tach. How do I narrow it down without spilling a bunch of hydraulic oil and potentially putting the chipper out of commission for a while?

How is it malfunctioning? Is it not stopping at all or does the autofeed click on and off randomly?

When the rollers are supposed to reverse, stop, them wait for the tach to catch up it just reverses for a split second then resumes feeding wood into a chipper that's bogging down.

Check your high and low setting if you haven't already. If any water has gotten in the tach you will have problems, maybe buying a new tach. My '01 200has a bad tach for now so we "manually" auto feed it. A new tach is around $500.

that would make some sense. The display has been dodgy and that coincides with my current problem since power washing my chipper. (I read in the manual recently to avoid power washing the tach at all costs)

But how do I know it's the tach? As opposed to a solonoid switch?

You could do a test with a twelve volt source at the solenoid. They are pretty cheap, and easy to replace as well. If you take the top off the solenoid while trying a decent piece, you will see it moving. Just have someone at the ready to reverse the chunk. All the solenoid does is open and close a valve. You could even check for current at the solenoid if you have the equipment. My guess is the tach though. Mine is a LOR I think and they are known for water problems as I have been told.

Gorman I just put a new tach in my Bandit 1590, I have the old tach that is still in perfect condition I just switched to a different brand so I can make adjustments in the field easily (the other tach you have to ship in to get the settings adjusted somehow). Anyway, if you want to try the old tach out I can send it to you and you can narrow it down that way if you want to buy it that's great too, you pay shipping.

What does replacing it entail? I assume the engine remembers the hours it has on it and just sends that signal to the tach. Do I have to sodder (spelling)? Is this an hour job or half a day. I need to know before I fiddle with my bread winner.

Yes it does set it back to 0 there may be a way to adjust the tach to make it read the number of hours you had when you installed new one. Took me about 30minutes to switch out the tack, a little wiring but nothing major. My old one is an Electronic Solutions Inc. tach, I've heard the LOR are problematic not sure never owned one though.

Weird thing happened, my autofeed started working again today out of nowhere! Good thing for me. Many thanks to you Treesandsurf, when my people rise up and take over this country I'll give you an ambassadorship.

We have a Bandit 250 of the approx same year. We cleaned the sensor magnet on the engine and checked that it was the right distance from the flywheel (I believe its the flywheel). Checked the connections, and just had new drive belts put on it (one broke due to the autofeed continuing to feed a log while bogging down).

The Bandit Rep said worn belts can contribute to the problem, if they slip, the rpms sensed by the machine will be out of whack, or something like that.

Works now. Can't attribute the cause to the effect with certainty.
