Price Per Inch?

I am assuming your stump guy ISN"T a member on TB!

We have clay soil, very few rocks. We charge $3.50/inch, largest diameter at ground level. Chasing roots is extra. If someone else removed the tree the price is $5.00/in, and they are at the end of the list!

So you only pay a buck a pop at Maddam Woe's palor?

I think it's a freebie. He told me he is all wheels and no cannon earlier.

Here in Tulsa it is $3 dollars an inch irregardless of who removed the tree. And that is the widest part of the stump at ground level. We chase roots within reason, but to chase every root on certain species means to basically excavate a yard, so that is extra dinero.

"irregardless" is not a word. Sorry, EZ's busy right now, so I'll be the grammar police.

I had seen it earlier, and almost wrote something, but you're right, I am too busy. Thanks Chris.

Alright, time for me to make you guys sick. I have a sub-contractor for stump work. I email him my stumps every day, he calls for the utility locate, carries his own liability and work comp. insurance. He bills me once a month for the stumps he has completed. Just got my bill today for $3,270.00 for the last month's stumps. The best part is that I billed out $5,700.00 last month in stumps, so I made over $2,400.00 profit for doing nothing more than selling the stumps and emailing them to my grinder every day. Yeah, I have to wait a week sometimes before he gets them ground, so I do have to wait on him to get paid sometimes, but I don't have to pay for any equipment, or damages, or employees to run it. By the way, he is charging me $2.00 an inch and happy to have my business at that rate.

Noel, that sounds cool. Does he clean up the grindings? If not, do you? An extra trip back would be a hassle, no?
95% of customers don't want to clean up their own mulch IMO.

Cory you are right that 99% of customers dont want to clean up a massive pile of mulch, but many see another hundred bucks on top pf their bill as an not needed expense.....that is until the see the massive amount of mulch that comes off of a big oak, or pecan, or better yet a river birch stump and then they become more than willing to pay good money to remove the mulch down to ground level. Hahahahaha!!!!

That's what we used to do as well. We set the rules, however, that as soon as we were 1) able to employ a person to keep up with the work and 2)sub-contracting out the cost of a stump grinder per year, we would bring stump grinding in-house. Which we did.

I started out with a 1957 Vermeer Model 10, what a COOL machine that was! Traded it for a new Vermeer 665A back in '88 and still running it, I here it all the time that it is an antiquated machine but it still runs and grinds fine for me and has been paid for since 1991. Somewhere in the '90's I bought a used Vermeer 222 and we still run it too. I no longer grind stumps if we didn't do the tree unless its a regular customer with an old stump or a tree I know they did themselves. Back where I was in NY it was all sand but where I'm at in Vermont theres a LOT of rock. Business in general has dropped horrendously the last 2 years and I get a lot of calls from people that had me bid the removal but went with the uninsured low bidder but they want the stump ground. I tell them if they did the td cheaper they can do the stump cheaper.

I can't believe it is $2 dollars per inch in some parts!

You think that is low? Don't venture into Northern Minnesota and try to make any money on stumps. I looked at getting into it when I moved up here to teach (tree care in the summer). All the local side timers were, and still are, charging $.75 to $1.25 an inch!!!! It didn't take me long to do the math and skip that idea...

I ended up selling my stump grinder last winter.

I give all of my stumps to a man who grinds for a living. He is charging $5.50 per inch. It seems to sell just fine here.
