Prettying up a white pine snag

moss

Been here much more than a while
It's nice working for an artist and nature lover, she requested that I carve an asymmetrical "roof" and some window openings in a dead white pine I took down for her. Eventually the snag will become more of a wildlife habitat than it already is.

Being relatively new to this type of saw work I found it was easier to start the tight dimension plunge cuts with my top handle and do the meatier work with a 261. One step at a time. I got the bar to chatter pretty well at times ;-) need to swing straight into the plunge faster after the nose is buried enough. On the ground I have that down, on spurs I needed to be more mobile adjusting my body position to control the bar angle changes. On a lower window where I could stand on something solid I did the vertical plunge cuts with my 372, was more controllable/safer with solid footing and a little more space between me and the trunk.

On my first set of plunge cuts I created a nice big "cheese" triangle of pine wood. Counter-intuitive, for each vertical cut I drove toward the center so I didn't end up with parallel cuts. Lessons learned, was easy to correct coming in from the other side.
