8 ton cobra is 16,000 lbs tensile. That's more than 3/8 EHS.
Am I missing something?

I might argue that its even stronger than steel because the anchors are more secure, being non-invasive.
 
Yes, you're ignoring the fact that even an 8 ton synthetic rope has no where near the abrasion resistance that wire rope does in any size.

Do trees drop limbs onto cabling strands? Does the wind supply a sawing motion?

If I rub a rough barked limb across a taut Cobra cable, will it be able to take it without failing the way a wire rope can?

All good points. Asking if I was missing something was sincere, not sarcasm.
In this case I would be able to observe the tree daily. I suppose that has some bearing on your valid concerns about long term cable condition.
