Prairie Creek

Terri and I spent the weekend hiking the many trails of Prairie Creek Redwoods. Just scratched the surface and tired out our feet. Boy were they sore when we got back to the truck.

Anyway at the start of our hike on the zig zag trail we came upon this group of four trees growing almost as one. A co-dominant if you may.

I have a lot more pics and will post them as I edit and re-size them for viewing. Enjoy this one.

I saw the Redwoods back in my early teens, and didnt really know to appreciate them. What I wouldnt give to get back out there these days.

You guys really are blessed out there!

Sweet! Last summer while I was grounded with a broke finger I got to see a few of the southern sequoias by springville CA. I was dumfounded but they were small compared to trees like that! That is one of the things I have promised myself I WILL DO is to get out your way and see/climb one of those amazing creatures!

The wife and I have been looking into a trip there. I dought that we would be able to swing it. But I no that if we could I would want to hook up with someone that no's the area and has access to some of them for climbing!

Nice looking Gerald. Looks like the weather was in your favor.

Do you have a small tripod like one of those small flexible Gorilla tripods? I've been thinking of getting one. Have used my wood hiking stick before, with a temp mount cannibalized from my tripod for a few days.

I always pack a tripod, Mario. Not expensive types. They are just too heavy for packing in the brush. I like the lighter medium priced ones. One criteria has to be met though: the tripod has to extend high enough so I don't have to stoop to look through the viewfinder. Quick release for the camera is also a must.

Terri and I may very well be up in Prairie Creek again this weekend. This time though we'll stay in Klamath. A good friend runs the Country Club there, and too, there's a much broader choice on the quality of the Motel rooms. The Palms in Orick has seen its better days. Did have a fun evening at the Hawg Wild Bar though. Formerly the Lumber Jack.

Here's a single tree not far off the zig zag trail. Boy this one holds its size like a real champ. Good full top and appears to be free of any defects. Bet it has over 200,000 bf in it.

The Hawg Wild always provides a nice relaxation for me, and everyone has been quite friendly in there. And good food, too. Did you try the beer drinking challenge with Mark the owner? Half my glass went down my chest because I tried to toss the contents down my throat.

In Klamath, forgot if you mentioned ever going into the Trees of Mystery. My first visit there was this winter. Apparently, Taylor had never been in there either, over all these years. He went to check out the place, and the Brotherhood Tree recently after I mentioned it. Was hoping not to send him on a wild goose chase. Anyhow, he said that although its only 235 feet tall, its one of the largest redwoods on private property. His estimate is 20,000 to 24,000 cubic feet.

EDIT ...

You posted again just before I did. Yeah .. that's really huge. Wonder if that one has been measured before. The base is gigantic.

Yeah Terri and I took the beer challenge, but you can't beat a man at his own game. Mark poured that beer down his throat as fast as down a drain. Real friendly guy and he really fixed up the old Lumber Jack. We had the ribs.

Oh yeah ... I had his ribs last time I was down there. Those were about the best I can remember having in ages.

For anyone else going through Orick, if you see this ride outside the Hawg Wild, the grill should be available. The trees in the background are Redwood National Park.
