Portland neighbors fight to save rare tree

A beauty! Someday developers may actually see a tree like that and walk away from the property.
...or build something to truly celebrate it, and maybe even plant new trees. We have a joke around the crew about pruning houses away from trees. "Ahh, I see we've got some dormer reduction over here, and utility vine removal, and a bit of asphalt weight reduction down here. The tree should be fine when we're done here!"

Hey ... didn't you say you saw a Spotted Owl nest up in that tree.

Heh .. Heh

There ya go...next time up find (or make) a hollow, stuff in some twigs and a puppet, , maybe a rubber salamander, take an outoffocus pic; instant preservation!

Excellent news re 4-16-14; will adjacent neighbors who own rootzone step up and improve rooting conditions on their land?

Hey Jesse I don't know the exact address, but it's two side streets south of Hawthorne on 50th. You can see it really well from the side street Mill.
Also 51st has a sweet view. Go check it out!

Nice photos will did you guys climb it today? Thanks for the info about the meeting.

If the phone was right, I left a message offering complimentary photography if the developer would like to provide prints to future unit buyers.

If trees do add value, in theory, he should be able to raise unit prices slightly to cover.

Ya, now we're talkin'.

There is some sanity left in Portland!

Dunno about that. They elected a gay pedophile mayor and kept him in office in a referendum vote even after the story broke of his relationship with a 17 year old boy. Never mind the cable car debacle to the OHSU Medical Center and other issues.

As for spotted owls, they are hybridizing with barred owls and being naturally wiped out w/o our help. Though the Fed is spending tax money for guys to shoot barred owls in an attempt to keep it from happening. Talk about a failed policy in the making.

You sound really nice. And by really nice I mean someone I would hate to hang out with. Debbie Downers are never fun.

Should get a tree boat way up there, and have a rotation of Arbo's stay in it until the tree is designated as a heritage tree, or some sort of legal protection. Get me a six pack and 22 and I'll sit up there taking aim at all those barred owls. I never made it to the tree this past weekend to much going on in puddle town

Check your facts. Barred owls are not native to the PNW.. Also I've haven't heard anything of them hybridizing, The barred owls will take out spotted owls utter slaughter, and other wise out compete the spotted owls...

http://www.fws.gov/oregonfwo/species/data/northernspottedowl/BarredOwl/default.asp

"Barred owls are native to eastern North America. It is believed they began expanding west of the Mississippi River around the turn of the 20th century. This could have been a natural range expansion or human-caused, or a combination of both. The most common theory is that the barred owl’s westward movement was caused by changes to the environment in the Great Plains as people increasingly settled there and dramatically altered the landscape. This may have removed natural barriers that previously inhibited the barred owl’s westward expansion. "

Please. It's obvious he doesn't need facts. He has his own opinions.
