Whats up guys,

Ive been seeing people talk (actualy chat) about ported chainsaws more and more (especialy on arborstsite, they seem to talk about chainsaws more than on treebuzz). Anyway, from what I understand its some kind of suppin up of the exhaust which improves the ability to take in more gas (I think, correct me if Im wrong). Can anyone explain to me, in general, what they actualy do to the saw to make it stronger. Can you port a small saw (like my 338xp) to make it more kick a$$?! Does anyone do this?

Thanks for the answers,

Matty

porting an exhaust is much different than porting a saw.

Go to Racesaws.com, thats where all the AS guys who built the chainsaw forum now reside.

-Exhaust port
-carb adjustment (some guys will widen the venturi and smooth out the intake of the venturi as well)
-timing adjustment
-porting the cylinder head to allow more air and fuel
-smoothing out the port windows (exhaust and intake)
-take some meat off the skirt of the piston
-pop up piston (some builders, not many)
-shave down the base of the head

and there are some other tricks and trinkets that go along with each individual builder as well.

most port jobs will run 300-500 and gain 20% more power, extend the life of the saw, and allow them to run cooler.

Choose your builder wisely!

Prices are more like $150 basic work saw - $250. Then there is the guys that think their work is GOLD that charge $300 - and up.

Most people call it woods ported for work saws.

I guess different builders demand different prices.

I was factoring in the shipping charges as well so that adds 50-100 depending where you are.

Good to see someone else here that runs/tinkers with ported saws.

Boston, correct me if I am wrong but doesnt performance work take life away from the saw???

Adds life. In a woods port the saw runs cooler, and more efficiently. If the mods are done to a a more extreme level, non woods ported, then yes life is diminished.

Speaking of the racesaws site, how does one join or read threads there?

When I tried to sign up it said registration was disabled and you can't read threads unless you sign in.
