Portable winch

I like the thorough videos Reg. Maybe you should do some video documentation work on the side. You've got a knack for it.

BTW. Did your block turn out okay?

Yeah, it had a soft landing and was choked to the side anyway...

and thanks

Reg,

your videos are getting better and better. I agree with Jamin that you have a talent for camera angles and editing.

That video was very calming to watch.

I have that winch Reg and I use the skidding cone when pulling small stuff and a log arch on wheels for the larger ones.
I seldom use it for pulling trees over near houses because I don't trust it as much as the GRCS for sensitive work.
I've pulled lots of trees off the utility lines in the boonies though and it works well.

I have the Simpson capstan winch, which is cheaper and possibly better than that device...and can be had for $495 in the configuration that attaches to a chainsaw.

It works fine for critical applications, if you back it up with a portawrap, or a progress capture prussic ahead of it.

Got mine from Tom Dunlap years ago, and modified it for bidirectional use. It works but tends to get the wraps locked up easier than can happen with a GRCS. Haven't used it in that way since I got the GRCS.

I bought a Simpson capstan winch especially to haul people and gear when we did the Tree House project. Haven't used it since. For the most part I wasn't too impressed with it. Too dang slow. Though for boat anchor it might be just the right kit.

We've got one of these winches that we've used a bunch for pulling brush up steep banks and it really works well. For pulling stuff along the ground you really need a spar tree to get some lift.

Reg I saw in the comments you had trouble with the rope spinning on the capstan. We found (with 1/2" dbl braid) that once the load was on you can get one more wrap on the capstan, then it holds well enough to stall the winch out if it come to that.
