pics of retired climbing lines

No offense but this is stupid. A rope could look perfectly fine and need to be taken out of service. You don't look at the rope itself. I mean you do as far as if it's been cut or picked strands or any kind of herniations but there is this thing called cycles to failure. You have uv degradation you can have grit and dirt inside working on the fibers from the inside out and the rope look amazing. It could be shock loaded and be compromised. The history of the rope is more important than going oh hey it looks like this and that guy retired one just like that. That's why I don't like loaning out or borrowing gear or ropes. Without know all pertinent information on the rope you cannot fully 100% say I am going to trust my life to that rope.

if you need to show pics, or even ask if it should? then it most definitely should be turned into a spare accessory or light rigging/pulling rope ;)

I know what visual defects would cause me to retire a line but I agree with Josh, some pics with a description of what the defect is and why it was retired would be a cool thread. And why don't we open up discussion on cycles to failure and other unseen rope defects while we're at it?

I never let my groundy's pack my ropes, I always do it myself and check them out thoroughly :) I climb on them, I stake my life on them, I inspect and put them away.

this is what i mean. even if the rope looks brand new in your pic. explain why it was retired.

i think cycles to failure is a great convo. its often talked about in rigging but why not climbing lines?

I agree with Gibson. If you have to ask or question is it really worth taking that "chance" of oh I think it'll be okay? Or do I want to spend another 100 bucks or better and know that my happy behind is going to stay in the tree? If there's a question retire it or get a second opinion.

Retirement

but theres no story behind how it happend.
