phytotoxicity from safflower seeds?

Has anyone heard of any phytotoxic effect from safflower seeds that are put out for bird food? I have a planting of hosta and ferns thast are immediately downhill from a birdfeeder and these have been very slow to appear compared to other ferns and hosta that are away from the feeder. /forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif

TreeCo-any info on this?

My greater concern is that this gartden is planted under some bigger pines. If there is some phytotoxicty could it eventually affect the trees as well?

Thanks.

Hey Mark. Sunflowers hulls are known to be allelopathic. I don't know about safflower hulls. The google search above has lots of info on sunflower allelopathy.

Not nearly as much on safflowers.

I just found 20 pots of hostas today than have been eaten by voles. Vole damage in the ground can result in smaller hostas.....or even gone hostas.

See you on Thursday.

Dan,

Are you a collector of Hosta?

Yes. We have over 1,000 cultivars in our collection and about 450 cultivars for sale. I've been growing hostas since 1986 and am good friends with Alex Summers. Alex founded the American Hosta Society in 1969 and he just turned 90. I know a few collectors in PA.
