Noticed a couple of fruit bodies at the base of an ash. fairly certain its Pholiotus squarrosa but i dont have any more info than that. So can any one tell me what effect it has on a tree (brown rot, soft rot etc.) and how quickly it effects the tree.
home owner knows nothing, neither does the tree officer for the area who came and specified the works some time before we showed up (months). only a couple of fruiting bodies were showing and they looked young. photo they looked like the photos, but we are going back there next week so i'll be armed with my ident books to double check. what i want to know is how badly they will affect the tree. the tree by the way is good overall health.
How much of the circumference had the fungi present?
Are they growing from the trunk, or just close to the base of the tree?
Something I have noticed about Ash, is that they can have quite a bit of decay and hide it well. Please try to take a couple of pictures when you go back!

[/ QUOTE ]Described as a soft-brown and a white rotter, it may not have any effect at all. Luley and Lyon did not even put it in their disease books, and Schwarze says it may be feeding only on dead tissue.
there where only a couple of fruiting boddys abou 1 inch from the base. the tree is healthy, no die back or noticeable swelling, sorry no photos, no camera at the mo.
