Petzl Tibloc

It is a cool looking tool. I bought one when they first came out and proceeded to shred the sheath on one of my 7/16" static lines. ONly used it one day.

I've followed several threads on rock climbing and rescue pages and most of the people agree, a rope shreader. It can be used but you would need to be VERY careful about setting the teeth.

If you do get one, practice with an old rope.

I have one already but I didn't field test it yet...
Of course it's no good on 1/2 inch ropes, but if I use SRT I would normally use a 10.5mm line. My feeling is that it could work well IF used as the top ascender, meaning the rope would be tensioned when sliding the tibloc up.
I was hoping someone has tried it...

i think it's marketed as an emergency situation tool isn't it? so in emergencies shreaded ropes are okay i suppose.

a ropeman is about as compact as it gets for a reliable rope grab, pretty tiny.

For just a rope grab, why not just use your friction hitch? I may not be able to descend easily on SRT using my friction hitch, but it will hold me easily and will not drag when ascending. It will not shred the rope and I do not need to remove it from the rope when swapping over to a traditional DdRT setup.

So tell me again why anyone would want one of these rope shredders and not use a friction hitch?

Rocky for my primary progress capture i prefer a rope grab of some sort whether it's a handled ascender or just a microcender simply because there's less loss of progress. it's pretty hard to set up a hitch to be as efficient as a rope grab. but i do usually have my hitch above my ascender as a backup, depending on the system i am using.

I've said this somewhere before but I'll say it again. My opinion is that the tibloc is a neat device (I have mine on my keychain)
In the tibloc, the cam action engages the teeth to hold you up.
In other ascenders the teeth are there to help engage the cam action.
This is the only thing that scares me

Still a cool device and for only $20.00, it's a good price.

Re: Ropeman Mk 1 and 2

Yoav,
The ropeman is a great bit of kit but remember its only got a 15 kn axle rating not 22kn,Rock not Arb specs

Sure it will hold but the red tape man don't like it......

The ropeman and tibloc will go up the rope without you putting any hands on it. I have both...prefer the ropeman. I prefer cammed ascenders, not toothed like the tibloc. I agree that it's good to have around if you know when and how to use it.
