Now if I can just convince my guys to take their pay bi-weekly.

I pay semi-monthly. Almost the same as biweekly, but two less paydays per year for me to pay for processing.
For employees, they always get paid on the same date of the month. Payperiods are 1-15 and 16-end of month. Time sheets due on last day of payperiod. They always get paid 5 days later. They know they will have a check before the rent is due on the 1st of the month, and can set up their automatic or manual paydays (such as for a credit card) to come after their other paycheck. They never get caught with a payday on the second of the month, sweating rent.
Works for me.
As an aside, for a good new employee, I pretty much always offer an advance on their paycheck after they work a few days or a week, so that they will have the money they need to come to work with what they might need (gas money, good boots, food), as they might start work on the 1st of the month, and then wouldn't get paid until the 20th.
