Passive Rigging Line Retrieval Reel

The Spencer tape body is really rugged and has a large diameter cartridge so lots of throwline could be installed. The body of a retractable tape measure works too. There are lots of those around with broken tapes but intact springs.

This is the pine removal that I'm going to vid the Spencer retrieval reel on come Thurs morning.

Multiple cameras will be rolling I'm told by the owner and the dog in the last pic.

good idea with spencer measuring tape have an old with a broken tape.
Needed it last week.

looking forward to see the film

Who told you about the rolling cameras the dog or the owner?

Replace the measuring tape with 30 lb test nylon twine with a plastic or rubber stopper that has slots for plastic zip ties to encircle the rigging line and retrieve it with. The lighter the weight the better. Plastic shower curtain hangers work extremely well too.

Today's speedline pine removal went well, at least until I started zipping trunk sections down the line from 80 feet up.

I landed all the brush on top of the wooden platform the client built over his pool with shoring and one inch plywood nailed to raised 4x6's well above the pools coping. the client owns a construction outfit, and had done a good job. It was a very sturdy dance floor!

It stood up well to the first three trunks sections. But the fourth was too much, and plywood came unhinged and flew. Not far, with no damage to anything but the plywood platform.

So there's a 60 foot stick left, and the platform ain't gonna work for the remaining wood, it's served it's purpose fairly well.

I had a fairly large crew with 6 men excluding myself, three of whom are soul brothers, one of whom I've known for over twenty years. Three of the crew are climbers, including my friend.

Black climbers are somewhat rare, but Charlie knows his stuff pretty well.

Should have pics and vids of this job this weekend I hope.

I llike working with soul brothers, and love their music. I had this song running through my head all day!

It's gone now, but the pics and vids are too numerous to be e-mailed, so the disks will come through standard snail mail.

Any of you guys run super high octane racing fuel in your saws?

You know the stuff that costs 10 bucks a gallon?

Man what a difference!

365 came alive today and made kindling outta that puny stick!

I've been wanting to start a post on gas for the past few months. Bull Sh** what the government did to ruin our gas! Been wanting to try race gas for a year now after a farmer told me he had to go to it to get saws to start after sitting a while...

I'm excited to see this in action Jomoco. How reliable is it? At least in terms of jamming up, or even reeling in. If it was attached to my saddle while attached to a branch I am rigging, I wouldn't want to get yanked from it... you must also fasten it to the tree at least on the bigger pieces right? Love the idea, want one so bad... Where can I get one?

The reason for using 30 lb test nylon twine is to limit any potential tugging on your saddle, and therefore you, to 30 lbs. Using plastic zip ties to encircle your rigging line with, is an excellent means of reducing potential tugs to much less than 30 lbs, ensuring your main nylon never breaks before the zip tie does.

You can buy Spencer logging tapes with 50, 75, and 100 foot tapes on their reels, easily replaced with nylon twine.

All it takes is initiative and less than 100 bucks. So no one's got any excuse for not having one in their climber's rigging kit.

Ah good ol' snail mail huh... Interesting, I bet, I mean he builds a landing zone over his pool for you!

Anyhow... thirty pound breaking strength not bad, as long as it's smooth riggin'!

So again, this reel works just as well with a speedline, as it does for retrieval from a distant spar? Do you have several of different lengths?

...oh and what do the ground guys do the whole time!?
