Passed My CTSP

Good job man! It still shows your dedication to our industry. Wish more of us arborists took safety more seriously and maybe if we all jump in on the CTSP cert maybe we can have more of a say/persuasion to up regulation in our industry. Can anyone take the course?

There is criteria for the course but not much. I forget exactly what it is but there is a brief description on the site. Now the pricing is different. I got member pricing because I applied using the fire department as my employer not the tree gig. I was eligible for member pricing because being employed with the fire department makes me " a safety professional otherwise ineligible to join the TCIA". Had I applied with the tree work as my "employer" I would have had to pay nonmember prices because my employer is eligible to join the TCIA but chooses not to. The difference between member and nonmember pricing is substantial. Like hundreds of dollars different.

I don't mean to talk anyone out of the cert. I just don't think it makes much difference until you are a Safety Manager or work for a big company. I would take that $1000 and buy every standard, take ehap w/rescue, tailgate safety books, and develop your own informal safety program with documentation via the health and safety program management guide they have for sale. Little more tangible bang for $1000 and I think that money would make a greater impact on safety than paying for a certification and teaching myself the regulations. Basically I paid $1000 for a test and a card. I don't even think I get a free sticker.

"Safety awareness is everyone's job. Program administration and design is a management function. Participation is required at all levels. As an industry, we just aren't there yet. We may never be. As long as there are unregulated and unenforced guidelines out there, tons of small companies that do whatever they want with no repercussions, the inbreeding and the bad practices will continue to be engrained in every greenhorn that goes to work for them and many like them across the industry."

Wow......I wish I could afford to pay you to relocate, and pay you to be a part of our team.......

He's already taken once he retires from the FD!lol

Two of our guys just got their ctsps too. They also had complaints about irrelevance and quality of content.
I agree that you could probably do more good with a $1000 safety budget and company policies that support a culture of safety.
On the other hand, paying for the card and test and class and getting official recognition for it (pay raise, promotion, etc.) causes people to take it seriously and get a safety placebo effect. The TCIA program isn't a replacement for common sense or knowledge of best practices, but can stimulate changes in the workplace. We're already doing things a little differently because of our new CTSP-driven "safety program." It's not really changing the way we do the work, but increasing awareness.

How about ctsp cert as a stepping stone for a career in training al la NATS or something like it. Im sure there are some NATS guys herr who could speak to that.
Thanks for sharing your experiencr steve

Should be. Guys from both offices talked about how well they are taken care of by their employer. Not an angry dude among them. I could only wish to be lucky enough to work for such a quality outfit. Your climber is a trip. Real salt of the earth guy! I can't recall his name but it was not one I had ever heard before. He certainly fit into my impression of the typical Asheville native LOL.
