Passed my CTSP exam!

Just found out today, I passed the CTSP exam! I think this is a great training tool for our industry, and is geared toward helping those of us who need a little push to coach our peers and others in the biz. Adult learners can be a tough bunch. I should know, I'm one of them.

Critiques that I have shared with Tim that I will also be forwarding to Peter:

This training should be 2 full days with the exam at the end. I was becoming saturated by the time the 'training' session ended on day one.

Also, the study materials should direct you more clearly to other needed materials such as the MUTCD that are relevant to the test questions. There were some exam questions that seemed to come out of nowhere.

Other than that, it was a great training. I recommend it to anyone looking to give themselves an edge in the education/training department.

That's awesome Tom. Expect plenty of pms coming your way. I'm very interested in this certification.

I like the fact that they do a "workshop" before the test.

Congats! It is a great cert.

I know how you feel about the program. I felt the same way when I took it in 2007.

I'm hosting one out here in SoCal and I'd like to get more into it, but I need to stay with a lot of the pre-arranged program elements. I think that a seminar/workshop on those elements would be very benificial, though.

The CTSP workshop is not designed to teach to the test - to give you all the answers you'll need. Remember that it is already assumed that you are and have been pretty familiar with the standards that apply to tree work. What the workshop is mainly for is to help with the communication and motivation elements needed, which is a big part of establishing a safety culture.

You can know a lot of standards and laws, but if you aren't motivated to see safety as a moral value you may not put them into play. Likewise you may not be so familiar with them but see safety as a value and may end up being more safe than a human lawbook.

It is a great program which has seen tremendous success, but I know Peter is still very interested in how to make it better.

Congrats again!

April 27-28. It may be a little late for this one, but there will be another in August. Check with the TCIA and they'll let you know for sure.

Re: Passed my CTSP exam!E

Thanks, everyone. TC, I realize that of course the study manual shouldn't give you all the answers, but some of the questions such as "What distance should your closest traffic sign be set up on a low speed road?" refer to things like the MUTCD, and what I was saying is that the CTSP manual should clearly list other materials such as this that you may need for the test.

Maybe I should know the answer to that Q, but I would have done a bit better if I had sought out the MUTCD prior to the exam, and a simple list of other materials would have helped. I don't know, maybe it's in there somewhere and I missed it. *?*

Re: Passed my CTSP exam!E

Tom, I know what you mean about those types of questions. And really, I don't know too many people who would be able to recall it off the top of their head. Many would just look it up. 100 ft...I think, for low speed. I'm usually more familiar with the higher speed which is around 350. The only reason I kinda remember that is because I'm usually the one walking the two signs out down the street and counting my paces.

What most usually do:
"Low speed - OK, we're in a residential area...is that two or three car lengths - no, that's when I'm driving...aw crap, they ought to see it from here."

And let's face it, how many city inspectors are going to walk it off to check you. If it looks close enough they'll generally be fine.

But, bottom line, it is good we know a bit about it so we don't have to look it up all the time.

I still think it would be good to get some seminars on these very topics. There gets to be a lot of details, so if we can all have some way of remembering them and applying them it would help.

It was not too bad. I think I would have scored in the high 90's if I had studied the MUTCD. As it is I scored an 84.

You need at least a 70 to pass, and the questions are mostly common sense, combined with some that have the answers revealed by questions that appear later in the test (I love that!).

The adult learning/coaching part of the workshop was the real 'new' stuff for me, very educational!
