Pantin?!?!

I use mine with the anchor bridge system, which is a pseudo-srt type set up.

It works very well, and utilizes one of your largest muscle groups to get you airborne!

i agree with both blinky and easy on this one, the pantin is a great device for double rope so that you can tend slack from under the hitch but as far as using it to get into the tree i would suggest footlocking, it would be much more efficent because if you use the pantin you work twice as hard to only get half as high in the tree because you are working on both ends of the line

my pantin is a critical part of my climbing system for srt

easy, can you make your avatar appear to dance like the other one? that would be incredible

The P works great for SRT and will work if you footlock the tail of your climbing line once you've tied in.

The P won't work on a doubled rope ascent though.

FL'ing is an essential skill to master. But...you will have much less wear and tear on your body in the long run if you use an SRT system to access the tree. The P is used in many SRT systems so you're starting with a good basic tool.

CMI makes right and left footed ascenders in case that works into your system better.

I have the pantin and the cmi. the cmi stays tight, the pantin loosens up all the time. My money is on the cmi.

Pantin must be used with a non-intuitive motion. A person must bend their knee, keeping the thigh upright and the lower leg backward. I tried bending at the knee and hip bringing my thigh to a forward, horizontal position, which didn't work. The Pantin kept falling off the rope PITA.

All you need to do is put a cheap biner throught the rear hole to hold the rope in place. I know there are previous threads about this. If you feed the line through the pantain then the biner it wont pop out like you are describing. Help on the old thread, it had pics?!

I sewed a set of ankle straps, similar to the P, on a Krol and it works just fine without kicking out.

And it's a lot easier than the P to release,,, when it's bound and your ankle is in your face.

i have the cmi foot ascender and have never had a single kickout and ive had it for over 8 months, i have used a pantin and experienced kickout before. dont know why would do it and another wouldnt, who knows......( pst.tom, thats your cue)

The CMI has a locking cam the P doesn't.

Can you unlock the CMI without lifting your foot up or bending down to unlock it w/your hand?

does the CMI get in the way when you're climbing? I leave my P on...sometimes even after I'm driving

I have both and prefer the P. It's lighter, smaller, and I rarely if ever kick out. Haven't noticed it loosening. I'm surprised Petzl doesn't have the left foot.

i can unlock the cmi but i use my toe of my other foot, as far as it getting it my way its not too bad, i do remember you posting something about it being a bit bulky when the cmi first came out and compaired to the p there is a size difference thats for sure, but the bulkyness isnt too bad, i as well wear mine in the tree, car or fast food establishment we may be dinning at that after noon, most people just think its a house arrest bracelet, around here thats pretty fitting for most tree guys

as far as the locking mech goes, im glad i went with the cmi then, i never liked putting a small biner to keep the pantins gate closed

I searched all forums for 'Pantin' in the subjects and bodies and came up only with this thread. If you could link us to it, it would be much appreciated.

It will work for doubled rope, but as several people mentioned it is not as efficient as foot looking. It is also hard to get going for the first 10 - 15 feet, but then there is enough slack that the weight of the rope will pull it through. I just have a ground guy tend the slack the first little bit.

I use the pantin going up DRT alot if I am able to isolate a good tip. I just like being able to work on the way up and bail out, if needed, with a pull of the hitch.

i used to use a pantin drt, before i switched to srt. I prefer throwing a line into any high crotch then tie off the end with a running bowline to the trunk of the tree. From their i footlock with a hand acender. Learning to footlock was a challenge but once you get the hang of it theres nothing to it.
