Pain on Gaffs

You don't need to go spend money on new spurs. Although they are not the latest, greatest, shiny day-glow green, super fly spurs, steel Bucks are simply great spurs. In fact I spent 5 hours in a pair today. They are comfy, kickass, affordable, and are bullet proof, so whats not to like. Set em' up with some Caddy pads or the Buck Velcro wraps (with inserts) and its as good as it gets.

Spur climbing is my thing. It's what I do. Trust me when I tell you, go get a boot thats used by folks who spend their lives in spurs. It will make a massive difference in your comfort level. Don't waste your money fucking around with some Arbpro's or any other arborist boot. You need a boot with a serious shank inserted in the insole. Get some Hoffman Pole Climbers, Power Lines, their modified Meindle Linemen, or some La Sportive Makalu's and be done with it. If they don't make a huge difference in your spur climbing pain I will do a swan dive out of a 200 ft Fir and pay for your new boots ( if I survive the 200 ft fall )!

The La Sportives, how tall are they, I like how they look, and have read they are very comfortable. Price isn't bad either. How are the sizes, do they run true or should I go up/down a bit

They are about 8" tall. They seem to size fairly true, but maybe a skosh on the small side.
I spent 8 hours in spurs on Tuesday, with over 3 hours running a 562XP or a 395XP. The Malaku's and Titanium Bucks were as good as it gets.

I wish for a wide toe box, a la Keen work boots, which I like for groundwork. Waterproof/ breathable, but non-insulated, full shank, safety toe, without a weak spot where the lower strap comes above the heel. Too much to ask?

The Big Buck Velcro pads combined with the lower velcro Buckingham straps is a killer comfort combo for me. Little bulkier than other options, but I can spend Long, Long hours on them no problem.

I'm not the only one climbing in jeans!
I sure as hell seem to be the only one competing in jeans.

Not at comps around here, man. It's like a pfanner commercial.

That is a big damn log in your avatar.
It was a pretty nice tree. I just happen to be milling the logs from that tree this week . Incredible wood! The kind of goodness you just don’t find at the lumber yard any longer. I will try and get a decent photo showing the insane tight grain of this stuff

Tossed between the Hoffman Pole Climbers and the La Sportives. Plan on ordering today I guess it may come down to which if more comfortable I suppose, any preference @rico ? Font remember price difference. I like the look of the Sports

I have a size 10 I don’t use. I wore them for like 2 weeks and they were so stiff I never wore them again. Perfect for spikes tho

Went with the Makulas. Also would these make a good upgrade instead of the Cadillac pads, they're out of stock on treestuff.

I sure hope I catch you before you buys those. Friends don’t let friends use stein gaffs or pads. Gawd awful. Run for your life.
I used caddy pads for 30 + years and they are wonderful. I have been using the Buck Velcro Wraps with the inserts (not the Big Bucks. Too bulky for me) for a couple years now, and I find them damn near perfect. A little more expensive than the caddy’s, but I like them a little better.

If spur climbing comfort is your goal, I think you made the right decision with the Makalu’s. Since I got my Makalu’s I very rarely wear my Hoffman’s. I actually just purchase another pair of the LA Sportiva’s for a back up pair, hoping they will be the last pair of climbing boots this old knuckle dragger will need.
