Outlines at ISA conferences

I have attended 3 ISA conferences in North Texas I was just wondering if other state chapters give out outlines for the conferences or supply note pads to take notes. This has me really sparred, we pay good $ for what, to get good info that for the most part is forgotten. ANd they will not even telll you what you are going to walk out with, (a certification for a tree risk assessor, certified oak wilt specialist?) And when you ask the speaker they dont even know. Geeeez come on isa

No One gonna reply out of fear that the isa might slap your hand or what? Anyone go to conferences or just buzz all the time?

I go to conferences and workshops all the time. (190 CEU's in the past 2 years) I take my laptop, sit in the front row, and take as many notes as I can, but I walk out of my house to attend a conference or workshop, with a plan to come home with as much knowledge as possible, and the tools to work that plan.

Blaming the facilitators of a workshop or conference for not supplying you with a notepad, seems kind of lame to me.

Oh So Quick to boast about your CEU's! What you replied about is not the point. I am glad you can sit there and take notes. LAME????
Funny but so many other Long Time Arborist that attend the same mettings have the same questions. I have read other replies of yours on other posts, why do you feel like starting SHOOT? For the $ spent there should be an outline. Yes mommy i take my note pad.

I call it laziness on the part of the presenter.

My wife has been program chair for a national healthcare professional's conference for years and from what I gather it is the rare presenter indeed that does not have at least their power point slides available.

I have noticed at national and regional conferences the more experienced the presenter the more likely they are to have handouts.

I know you are torqued there Fatcord, but no need to jump completely all over Cerviarb. On the surface his "lame" comment may not seem pertinent to the thread but he does bring a couple of good points. Certainly some note taking supplies could/should be available but then again, why would an attendee not come prepared?

Since you have spent good money for these seminars and yet feel you are not getting your money's worth there are several options available for you to change that problem.

First is fill out the comments forms and bombard the organizers with notes, comments and emails telling them what you expect!

Second is to go up to the presenters and ask if the ahve anything . You can also ask them during the Q&A session in front of everyone else. It may spark them to make something available.

Third, you might want to start being more particular about what seminars you go for. If you are not getting your money's worth then you really ought to consider not spending your money on them.

Part of the reason some conferences are so durned expensive is the rules under which some of the conference centers have to work.

For example at some of the conferences my wife sets up if a projector blows a bulb they cannot simply walk into one of their other rooms and grab that projector.

There are specific facility employees that have to do it and they are billed for it. Sometimes we're talking in the hundreds of $$$ just to get some equipment moved around.

Anyhow, there is a lot going on behind the scenes and at the regional or local level it is difficult at best to get quality speakers.

I'm not making excuses, you still need to let them know your thoughts, but there are things going on that makes what you are asking for not necessarily a simple fix.

Golly, VT must be one of them there union states--someone needs to secede from something!

Definitely fill out those comment cards--good for all.

I do as cervi with the front-row, laptop deal--why pay good money to see some guy's bad haircut? If you know how to type, doing it while you listen is not all that hard; just practice. bad part is when i'm so excited the keys clack so loud that i distract my neighbor--i get those looks sometimes like stfu...maybe in the future there will be a laptop/press section??

Handing out prints of powerpoints is the biggest possible waste of paper. Yes handouts are nice--i try to make mine 2 or 4 sheets printed frontandback, nutshelling the talk. Mark and Tom were kind enough to allow me an article here so if you want to see a 4-page handout from Expo, there/here it is.

i always refer to published articles and put up my email and invite folks to comment/ask about anything--<1% do. FatCord, have you contacted the speaker?

once at expo i had a guy jump up and take flash pics of almost every slide. please do not do this unless you want to blind the presenter.
