Our New Log Truck

Cameron, if you would like a spreadsheet for the Doyle scale just ask, I have posted it on an Excell workbook with 3 pages: Doyle, Pine Green Weight log chart and Oak Green Weight log chart. The weight charts are quite expansive, going to 90" in diameter (I think) and 26' in length, fits on a standard 8.5x11 sheet, printed in landscape. I print mine front and back, if you wanted the doyle on the same sheet of paper you could cut out the bottom right corner of a log chart (largest diameters at the largest lengths) and insert the doyle, keeping everything on one sheet of paper.

A set of lifting tongs on a short piece of chain could handle that log, or chaining the log to the grapple (but it requires someone to enter the box to unchain, tongs can be bumped loose when they are unloaded.

Having some "teeth" welded to the inside edges of the grapple would also help, didnt think about that earlier. Have them welded to the outside of the bottom/outside jaw and the inside of the top/inside jaw. Short pieces of 4x.375-.5" flat bar, cut into triangles (4" makes 2 "teeth") would work very well. You might could get by with 1/4" even, but you wouldnt want them to bend and hang up closing the grapple down small.

I was able to pick up this big nasty, but was afraid to put it in the back of truck. The peice slipped out twice. Does anyone else have suggestions, like cutting notches in the log for the grapple?

When in doubt . . . Chain it!!

They all fit. Which one of these isn't like the others? /forum/images/graemlins/driving.gif

That has got to be in regards to Big Jon driving and backing up skills? I do wish the previous owners who built the lean to had made the bays atleast two feet wider. I do make it my chore to back the trucks in each day.

Sterling Stable....I like it.

Question:

How the hell can you guys afford that stuff?!? I've been agonizing over the formulae and I can't figure it out. Cameron you've got what, a million dollars worth of iron there. With a 10 year replacement expectancy (I don't think that resale could/should have a great bearing on the numbers) You've got to push 100k per year for the equipment alone. If equipment accounts for 10% of your annual expenses then you need to pull in 1mil per year; minimum. If the average crew member is worth 1000/day and somehow you can get 100 productive days out of them you need at least 10 guys making premo coin for you?

Maybe my youth, but I don't see our market allowing that kind of progression. Sigh.....

I went to the dump for the first time today w/ the new truck. I am really amazed how much wood you can stuff in the dump body. I was curious what my pay load was and weighed in at 71,100lbs. Need less to say over weight. This dump charges by the yard; total of $360.00.

P.S Mangoes, that for the compliment.

Picture after unloading. Must say a little scary. The dump isn't the most level of ground. You dump the truck from a lever on the side of the truck. I wish the dump valve were in the cab. I hate to even think of the truck flipping, let alone be on that side controlling the dump valve.

That is one sweet truck. My bud here has about the same version, only in black. $160,000. LORDY.

Cameron,

Now that you've had the truck a little while, how do you like it?

Would you have built something a little different?

Any problems?

Your pictures are a little large for my slow connection. Never did see a complete picture of the whole truck. Spent about 2 hours trying.

Can you list your specs:
what truck model
what GVW
what model and make of the arm?

about what price total? if you care to share that, or you can PM me that.

Did you pay FET tax on the whole deal? (over 33,000GVW)

thanks,

Xman, must say I'm very happy with the truck. It is working out well. Total price of the truck was $160,000.00 plus a $1500.00 shipping charge. The price did include the FET tax (which was $16,800.00). Total GVW 66,000. Did notice I'm over weight when loaded to the top. The truck does have 90inch sides by a 23' bed. I believe it's a 40-45 yard container. All my choices are working out so far. I like that it dumps, the high sides, the mount behind the cab. Not to concerned about the limited reach of 25', hasn't been a problem. The truck is a sterling 9513 w/450hp engine. The grapple is the prentice 124.

P.S. You should look into one of those high speed internet connections, It is amazing how fast I can click on pictures.
