Back then they were considered freedom fighters who successfully defended themselves from communists of the USSR. Osama was considered a moderate with mainstream views, he became what we now call extremist when the US set up military bases on Saudi soil during desert storm. He wanted to take his own army out to subdue Saddam and correctly predicted that those military bases would become permanent. The CIA also worked with Saddam when Iraq was fighting Iran, ended up giving him biological weapons that he used on his own people. During WWII they worked closely with Mao Zedong, and Ho Chi Minh to fight off imperial japan. My point is that the way they dealt with Osama is out of the ordinary. International relations are always changing and it is not possible to predict everything that will happen. One mans terrorist will always be another mans freedom fighter.
