A vacant lot, around 10 acres, of blackberries and brush was cleared last year by the City of West Linn to restore part of the oak savannah that used to be here before this area was developed. The other day I was on a bike ride and decided to cruise through and check things out. They had planted it with white oak (I'm guessing), and put deer protection tubes around each one, probably close to 1000 seedlings. Unfortunately, every single one had been choked out by blackberries and grass, and had died and rotted, and the only thing left were the perfect cylinders of dirt sticking up about 2" from the potted plants.
But to my amusement, there was a small area where all the trees had survived. except the "trees" in the tubes weren't WHITE oak, they were POISON oak. I can only imagine the overly enthusiastic volunteer running around with the tubes and stakes finding a whole patch of "oaks" that they would get to save! if only they knew!!
