Piecing apart a first growth Douglas-fir. This was kind of an unfortunate tree to take down but a new road is being built too close to it for it to stay. It was in bad shape, only the sapwood was sound until the lower 40' or so of the stem. The first cut I made, the topping cut, was mostly powder, it surprised me a little. I didn't measure it but I would guess it was a little over 180' and just under six feet through near the base.

Very impressive, Gord. What a shame about the tree having to come down.

I was thinking about the punky wood at the top.....I don't think I would have been able to handle that..... So freakin tall!!!!!!!

Good work!

Nice job, too bad for the lost of a great old giant, but you have to due what is best.. Just got back from Canada working at the UBC and they also have some sweet looking trees there and up at stanley park they also have some cool trees .

Later from SO-CAL

great job once again Gord. FUN watching that one. I also was wondering what saw you were using. Were you responsible for the removal of the wood as well? or was that the responsibility of those putting in the road?

Thanks for the compliments.

The saw was just a 460 with a 30" bar. The cutting was fairly easy because of the punkiness.

We just had to get it on the ground, there were several excavators there that could clean it up.

Man, that WAS a big arsed tree! Too bad they couldn't move the road, instead... ha.

Every click a different pic!

Nice one Gord, cant believe not getting the top coming out!
how come you couldn't fell it in a oney?

Also, did some poor sod have to buck the last section after it fell into that dirt and gravel?
