^^^ lol

I believe on the class 2 splices it's more about slippage than strength loss hence the locking Brummell. The brummell locks so you can get away with a short bury.

With a class 1 double braid the bury is only about 8 or 9 inches long which leads me to believe that your sling could be a lot shorter than 33 inches. At some point reducing the length would make it difficult or impossible to put together, but would it reduce the strength of the sling?

I just started splicing and this is the very first time I've considered deviating from the printed instructions in any way. Looking for help 'cause I want to be safe. Thanks.

As long as you have the recommended length of bury on each side I wouldn't see any issues with it. I wouldn't have the burried ends cross over so much that the diameter of the rope is enlarged in the middle.

I've made eye and eyes out of 10mm beeline and 10mm ocean that were right at 30" with no issues. The fid length on 8mm would be shorter than 10mm which in theory would have meant mine should have been around 38 inches or so.

Rockettree, there's a difference between the eye splice (for prusik) and an end for end splice (for sling). The difference is in how the cover and core interact with each other in the two different splices. The end for end will be relying solely on the length of bury, like a finger trap, whereas the eye will have cover and core cross through each other and back into the line.

I think that should work out fine, though a longer bury can't hurt. I've done a few like that with good results. That particular cordage is supe enough to stay flexible even with a longer bury. Make sure it's stitched well. The throat gets real right after the eye is complete.

I have been told that the manufacturer says that Ocean cannot be spliced but I see a lot of people splicing it. Are you using these spliced ropes as life support? or just for rigging.

Honestly, the construction is close enough to a "standard" double braid line that I don't care what the manufacturer recommends (I have to really go through my gear before competition and make sure I'm following rules) but I believe that they do and have provided splicing instructions for ocean poly. I still run Samson directions wherever I can for the most part.
Hell yeah we climb on them.

1st post here. I’m looking to do some i2i prusik cords for my hunting saddle. Am I looking to use the Samson double braid instructions with a whip lock sewn on? I’ve done some eye splices on tachyon before, that was tough. Thanks for clarifying. Also, any input on the Brian toss method for pulling a string to whip lock? This would be using the 8mm oceans poly.

Went back and reread thread on my desktop, much clearer now. I think I have all the info needed.

used these methods, and got my i2i done last night. much easier than I thought it was going to be. I ended up using a welding rod to make a wire fid, and a bench vice to hold it to pull the cover/core back thru. it did take a little effort, but getting easier each time. thanks for the input.

Used the method's described on both the Samson Predator rope tether, and then for the 8mm Ocean's poly. I could have gone another 1-2" on length on the Oceans, but once some weight is put on it, it'll be good. This is to be used for a tree saddle for archery hunting. O-ring on the large eye on the Samson to help keep it in place when setting it up. The eye's are locked stitched, used the Brion Toss method. The only issue I have is trying to get the needle thru the rope about 1/2" below the splice. Any tips?

Pliers or push needle through on a firm surface, or go farther down from the splice. Your tight eye on the Predator looks good, but the larger eye’s cover doesn’t look quite right, it might have to be loaded more to set it. It looks like the o ring has bunched up the cover, and the braiding doesn’t look uniform, it should look just like the plain rope.

I should have taken a pic without the oring as it makes it looks funny, It’s good in the real world. Lol. The oring is an inch or so above the splice. Thanks for the input though.

Here’s an updated set of pics with the o-ring moved. Let me know if it still looks funny, I’ll go back and try something with it if it doesn’t look right.6070960710

It definitely looks like something is going on with the cover.
But if you followed the directions and the splice was fairly smooth to make and it feels solid in the throat, you won't be breaking it with your body.
