New (old stock) Ms440

Location
NE Ohio
Just got back from my local stihl dealer and low and behold, like the internet chatter said, you can buy the 440 again. ( at least while there in stock ) I ordered one with a 24" bar and cost me 709.00 before tax. That's a hundred bucks less that that (IMO) junk 441. just thought i'd let you 440 lovers out there know you can go pick yourself up a brand new one.

Thats what I thought too. Had to be a old one left over because it sold for 709. The new ones with updated HD 2 filter with 25" are bringing 829-900+

That price doesn't sound right. It is about $900 cheaper than I have seen.

The 440 is nearly as strong as a 441, a pound lighter, and easier in the hands.

just picked up the new 440.. and man is it sweet. so much better to lug around than my 660. I attached a couple of pics of it. I'm wondering about the air filter... you guys said theres a new filter setup on the new 440's? This saw has a nice chrome top on the air filter and I though the other 440 I had before was black.

Sweet deal and that is the new one with new HD 2 air filter. That is the cheapest I have heard them going for so far. WTG.

What NE stihl dealer in Ohio was selling for that? PM me if you like.

Weight would be my bet.

MS 440M 70.7 cc 4.0 kW 6.24 kg 800 cc 330 cc
(4.3 cu. in.) (5.3 bhp) (13.5 lbs.) (27.1 oz.) (11.2 oz.)

MS 460M 76.5 cc 4.5 kW 6.5 kg 940 cc 330 cc
(4.7 cu. in.) (6.03 bhp) (14.4 lbs.) (31.8 oz.) (11.2 oz.)

So the 440 has a steel flywheel and the 460 has an aluminum one? Also, aren't the motor mounts different with the advantage going to the 440? Obviously the 460 has a little more power but at the cost of a pound in weight. However that may be an alright price to pay for some people. I like the idea of a 440 chassis with the 460 top end. Is that a simple swap of the piston and cylinder or is it more involved than that? Boston, do you know anyone who does woods porting that does a good job. I am going to have to do something about my 8 or 9 year old 460 soon and I'm not sure if I should rebuild my 460 and woods port it or buy a new saw. Either a 460 or, now that I have seen this thread, maybe get a new 440 and swap out the top end.

460 has a plastic flywheel.

Its a direct bolt on, but you have to modify (drill/cut) the plastic top cover to allow room for the bigger top end and the compression release button.

I wouldn't woods port an 8 or 9 year old saw, bottom end is probably too weak?

Racesaws.com ......? Not sure whos still in the game and who still has a good reputation, had mine for 5 years and its going real good still with no problems!

So are 440's still available or discontinued?
