new gear inspection/safety

picked up a split tail system from wesspur. this is my first purchase of gear. ive been using gear that was assigned to me from work.

aside from visual inspection and making sure carabiners lock gates are functioning properly, what else should i do? just take it slow and low as i would with anything?

seems like a stupid Q, but was curious.

Better to ask what seems like a stupid question about safety than not to ask and do something dum.

Feel for irregularities in your hitch cord and rope, both work gear and your own. Perhaps even more important with work gear, in the event that anyone else uses it. Check you harness stitching, visually, as well as the other components. Look for hairline fractures at the pins on the carabiners.

I've been curious what your screen name means.

No, good question.

What Sean said, just keep an eye on things and check out anything that changes like thickness or flexibility in rope gear, loose pins in shackles (my personal favorite), make sure the prusik eyes are staying up by the pulley on the carabiner... you'll get a feel for it.

Take it low and slow like you said, sounds like you know what to do.

just childhood imaginary friends. yeah, nothing abnormal or anything :)

thanks for the tips though, always do a safety check before i go up and re inspect rope and gut straps when putting them back into gear bag after use.
