New Gas Chippers how are they?

Craneguy nailed it. 20 min for two guys to change 4 blades on our 15 inch. Anvil adjustment about 15 min (the only time we have needed to). Knife wear is fairly consistent unless you get something trough you were not supposed to. But hardware doesn’t help either drum or disk. I

I think I saw a picture of your engine failure on Facebook. That just sucks this time of year. If you have a good dealer they will work with you on your demos to make sure you have a chipper.... after the sale, don’t hold your breath!

Mobark seemed a little easier to work with on a demo. Bandit wanted to come with us and let us run it for “a little bit”.


For us it’s been one thing after another this year but just gotta roll with the punches! Every days a good day some are just better then others.

Almost .......
Let me explain. I'm a gear head fanatic from some 30yrs ago. I already had interest in automotive related fields since grade school. Then in my late teens I got bit by the drag racing bug. Lived it, ate it, and breathed it. 15yrs ago I got interested in making big power with diesels and stareted researching all I could. In this researching I've learned that gasoline was a by-product of refining diesel. Another words, gas used to be nothing more than a waste product. They finally figured out how to harness the power of this waste product and engineered the gas engine. Remember, oil burners were invented and produced before gas engines.

Something more for all of you to ponder before making your next purchase. In mileage a diesel engine will out live a gas job hands down! Comparatively 400k plus to an average of 200k. Not to mention the diesel has worked twice as hard as a gasoline commuter car.
When an oil burner is operating it's cylinders are not being washed with solvents.

IMO maintenance is also simpler and cheaper on diesel engines. No plugs, coil packs, or crank triggers for ex.

Yea we had the same issue at first with our demo days. Morbark just dropped the machine off and let us go with the first unit. I put 8 hours of pine, fir and hemlock through it. The second machine he hung out all day (12 hrs)… Boy am I glad too. Every other crane pick the damn machine would break down and he had to fix it.

Our first time out with bandit the salesman said he had all day and would hang with us. But the 2 giant spruce trees we had went through in a couple hours. I was kinda disappointed we didn't get to run it for a couple more hours :). The second machine we tried he didn't have time and I needed the machine. He dropped it Friday night and we ran it for 6 hours on Saturday with no supervision :). It was worth putting up with the salesman because we ended up with the first bandit we tried. Of course we had two guys that were very familiar with the bandit controls so once he stepped away from the controls.... IT WAS ON!!

Thanks for sharing Craig, I just pulled the trigger on a new Morbark 18R this week, it’s on the line so should be getting it first week of August, I went with the 5.7 gas, I demo’d the Vermeer BC1800, which I was surprised by it chipped some big logs with ease, but too many electronics, bump bars and on and on! The AX19 we demo’d last year was ok, but the 18R totally destroyed it in all aspects. I got the single axle, winch, fixed tray to feed with machines, it’ll be a nice addition for Crane removals. I am trading in my model 13 which I got good $ for. I know what your saying about gas and diesel as well, but for me I want to avoid the tier 4 garbage all together, one repair bill or breakdown on that crap your in the thousands, a new gas motor if ( hopefully never ) you can replace for an acceptable price.

I know you'll appreciate the increase in diameter 10 fold. And your 110% correct on the tier 4 garbage. The emissions crap killed productivity. More fuel gets consumed, more emission related components to fail, more coin to operate, and higher costs to maintain and operate. This has skyrocketed prices of good used, (especially low hour), equipment. In this sense, buying new, a gasser is a hell of a deal.

If ya get some time ..... post some vid of that big Morbark in action. I,m interested in seeing a small block eat wood!
PS I'm also glad you passed on the Vermeer. ;)
 
my Bandit 16" diesel works great! You do get more burn time out of stink fuel, and gas is super expensive here in BC. I think the stinkers have a bit more torque too. They should last much longer than gasers too. They have fewer moving parts. They are heavy though and expensive to buy, but in the long run you are going to claim it as an expense and the fuel so>>>?
 
Had a demo on a bandit 12xp with a 3.0 (84 horse). Not a huge chipper and can’t say we were all that impressed with the power.. being a company that does 90% hand removals and trimming size isn’t the most important thing.. the price tag sure does help the cause for this chipper too!

Get ready for a dog! The two knife cutter drum in that 12 r robs hp like nobody’s business. We tried one with the 76hp JD and 130 GM, and both were terrible. (2) 10.5” knives on a 14’ drum just doesn’t cut it (pun intended).

We ended up going with the Bandit 15xp with the 4.3. @flyingsquirrel25 was right about the Mobark robbing horsepower; also gets a pretty good bounce to it when feeding longer large branches. Scored a pretty good deal on the 15xp because it was rented out for a month before we bought it(only 65 hours) With winch, 4.3 gas and welded trey we were out the door at 45,000(they payed the taxes too)
Now if bandit would just get their crap together with our countless issues on our new 2650 stumper:muyenojado:

Nice. I agree you need a bigger box at least. That chip box looks tiny on that truck even. 16 foot, high capacity, without the ladder box is my 2 cents. I don’t know how that converts to your measurement scale but that’s 30 yards capacity for us. I’m happy for you. That’s a nice machine. I’ll call you next week about Charlotte once I know what’s going on with the company I’m with.

That’s about the same size box I use, which is fine if you don’t have far to go for each dump!
 
We just purchased a 2017 BC1800 demo/rental unit which I like because we basically get an extended warranty out of the dead. With about 150 hrs on it you figure all the little stuff would be worked out already. So far we really like it. We have babied it so far but have put 18" in it and it has no issue. Recovery time is so much faster. The remote that comes stock on BC1800 are a game changer. That's what the guys love the most. You never have to get off the machine.
