Negative postings and personal slander

RyanCafferky

Been here a while
I love Treebuzz. I don't Login here much and don't post very often but I browse the forum every day. The techniques I have learned here and the knowledge I have gleaned has made me a much better climber has changed what was a just job for me into my hobby and lifestyle.

The constant personal attacks and negative postings especially about the actions of certain people on here really takes away from what could be a true learning environment.

Many of you post about the lack of professionalism shown by those who have the git er done attitude and wear very little PPE. You post about how their actions reflect poorly on us as an industry. I agree with the sentiments expressed but how those sentiments are expressed go to a level that seems far from professional in my eyes.

I think you can call a turd a turd without having a whole bunch of crap come out of your mouth.

Call people out on what you see in their videos or postings. Tell it like it is with a critical eye for all posters and not just the community punching bags. I would just recommend doing it in a way that reflects your professionalism. Your customers can easily look up your postings on here and read what you say as readily as I can. I know I would want my peers and my customers to think I was a level headed, respectful person trying to advance the industry through learning and constructive criticism rather than personal attacks.

Much respect for everyone.

Maybe the videos could be monitored as well and be taken down if they dont reflect what this site is suppose to stand for.

Very well said and timely too. I couldn't agree more. I am often typing up a post or reply only to read it back and decide that's not of any benefit or acceptable for an open forum. I have gotten into a slugging match on here twice and it really made no sense, one was settled amicably the other not. I come here to learn and share, not be confrontational. I intend to be respectful of all and ignore comments made to me which are not. I ain't perfect but I strive to at least respect others and thier differing opinions.

Good post, and good points, Ryan. I can work on holding my tongue when I don't have the nicest thing to say.

I will say that I hate Acer rubrum 'October Glory'. Hate it with all my heart. Wish it would die.

When Mark and I talked about starting TreeBuzz over 12 years ago we both agreed that we would have a light hand on the 'edit' button. The users/community would sorta set the standard. Not that the inmates were running the asylum but more like the regulars keep order without needing bouncers around.

Over the years this has meant that there is a certain amount of trash talk. No different than real life. We've asked people to self-edit and consider taking the nastiness off-line. Once in a while a thread gets locked or deleted after it's had it's life. Kind of like an invasive species.

Why not get rid of the videos that promote un safe work practices.Thats usually where alot of this talk begins .Why not set up rules regarding safe work practices for videos to be posted.

However Jimmy it's not just videos that get people going, hard to police emotions that can flare up in various other threads around the buzz.

Nice post Cafferky. I feel the same about this site.
It's alright to post videos that may be unsafe or unprofessional, but slandering someone for it is uncool. On the flip side, being defensive because you got ripped for lack of ppe/professionalism is not ok either. People just need to be more respectful.

Its the keyboard warriors,I just think we should all type with words of repsect like we would face to face.Cause you never know you just might run into someone you flamed online.man that would be awkward, treat others the way you want to be treated. But I still think videos that promote un safe work should be banned, what are they good for, specially if the people posting them defend it..

because those videos are good learning tools too. When many of us point out that unsafe practices were used, many people learn from the reaction.

I've met people that I "fighted" with on the forum and it has actually been ALL fun so far. It's kinda a double take when they find out, "your the X-man?" and we both laugh.

My first one was at my first WMC, I met Noel. We had it out over Bradford Pear topping on this forum, quite heated. He stoped posting shortly after that.... (which I'm sad if I was part of that). Anyway, we met and it was his first conference too. Slightly awkward for about 3 seconds and then we got along very well. Actually, I found we were very similar and my wife said we were very much the same type of person. Really cool guy, if he was nearby and I had time, I'm sure he would be a close friend.

A person has to be a real freak to get upset on a forum, then HATE the person face to face, just as they thought they did on the forum.

I was hoping to meet Daniel at the Expo, but never saw him. I think and hope he would be cool in person.

I met Tom Dunlop in person at the expo. I thought he was just "okay" on the forum, to be honest. But in person I REALLY REALLY liked the guy.

Forum personalities and the real deal can be quite different. Anyone that holds a grudge from a forum and walks up to someone in person and punches them in the face, is a real douchebag.
