Negative blocking: can we find better words?

Can we find a better word combination than "negative blocking" ?

Apparently it's not a good choice of words because so many people do not know what to call it and this has been going on for many years now.

I've never liked the words, "negative blocking", I don't think it describes it well.

I've been thinking about this for a very long time now.

Best I can come up with is "inverted rigging" or "180 rigging".

I kind of like "180 rigging".

What do you think?

Do you know of anything better to call it and can we start using this new term to make a change?

People just do not retain the term "negative blocking".

It could be with a log or a top. It's still 180 degree change, or inverting the material.

What do you think?

I swear, at least one or two times a year a climber that has put in plenty of years asks me what do they call it.

Sometimes I have to even think for a while about what the term is if I hadn't used it in a while. It just doesn't stick for some reason.

"180 blocking" does not account for a leaning tree.. you may consider that a small point, and that is the point. We'd like our terminology to be as accurate as possible.. I prefer to use "rigging down a spar"... though that isn't completely accurate either becasue there are many times when its more than a spar.. perhaps call it rigging down a top or spar as needed for accuracy... none of it is perfect.. perhaps we can invent a word... "ride rigging" or something...

Tom, "slam dunk" sounds like you like something. which one was used?

Treehumper, good try, but try again. Good to brainstorm.
Levi, You want some free X-Rigging Ring slings, or what?
Daniel, bla, bla, bla, I think it's okay to generalize it. so what if it's not exactly 180 degrees, jeeze.

How about we not complicate thigs any further. Negitive rigging/blocking discribes the action of dropping a top or piece beyond the zero point (block/rings) before it is caught by the rope, sling or rigging. Nothing complicated with it and I think (my opinion) its a pretty darn good 2 word discription of what we are doing.

When I first met my wife I had a hard time remembering her name... I didnt ask her to change it so I could remember it better.

bahahaha i like flying squirrel's reasoning and example.
but i never liked the term negative blocking myself.
i always just specify, hanging limbs, swinging limbs, topping out, or blocking logs.
or i just call it man stuff.
maybe spar rigging?

Lead blocking?

Meaning where the load is above the rigging point such as in 'lead climbing', where the climber is above the anchor or rigging point.

Not much less confusing.

We call it "lowering" (with a rope to control/slow/stop decent) as opposed to "bombing" (with out lowering line).

And "lowering" is either with or with out a block(s) and/or porta/gcrs

I might say,"we are going to lower it, block and portawrap set up, blue rope)

good feedback response thus far, keep em coming.

Tom D, I just re-read and understood your post this time. ha ha, you called it "slam dunk", okay.

I hear ya.

I'm just saying the term is not understood by most people and if you talk to someone that isn't on a tree forum, they have no idea what you are talking about. Even guys on a forum forget what it's called.

It would be nice if there was a simple word combination that was more understood.

Maybe "negative blocking" is the best we can get?
