Neck tether suggestions?

Thank you for that description, Tom. I would love to see a picture and try to duplicate it. I enjoy tinkering. I am comfortable with this setup, the prussik releases easily. I had been using closed loop tethers (see above) but this really struck me as a better option. I've been sporting the neck tethers for about a year and haven't had any issues, yet, but I can certainly appreciate how an emergent situation could necessitate a hands free break away.

Edit: Thank you for adding the picture.

I really liked the idea of an open loop and prussik and finally got around to making one with what I had on hand. Blue moon and some 6mm tech cordage. Sliding double fisherman's knot captures the SMC ring. Rock X carabiner to tend my climbing device. My knee ascender will clip into the ring.

Yours is prettier than mine. I particularly like the height adjustability of this sort of tether because different devices have different height tending points and with this it can always be dialed in perfect.

Been using 5/8 webbing tied into a loop and crossed behind my back. It works, not stellar, but it’s multifunctional and I’ve always been leery about putting ropes around my neck... the open loop with a prusik seems like a good compromise, as does the bungee with a light keeper. Thanks guys, I’ll give them a try!

I love the idea of the buff for comfort. They're snug enough around the neck to prevent snagging, elastic, but they're also super strong. The xsre biner will break, but maybe not before doing some damage to your neck. It seems like using something more easily disconnected (self disconnecting) between the biner and buff would be an improvement. Maybe magnets? TreeStuff sells a magnetic version. The comments on it suggest a few mods that are probably helpful improvements.

Working off of Rob’s idea today. I’ve used this little catch I found on a dog crate for many years as my rr chest attachment. It is easier to attach to the device than a carabiner, and I like that it is weak and will break if it needed to.

Did the bulk of a climb today using buff with an accessory biner attaching my little catch. It tracked better than my 4SRT chest ascender.

Small improvement which I tested out and enjoyed even more on a quick ascent was swapping accessory biner with a zip tie, pictured as such. Working with same logic of wanting something that would break in the event you wanted it to.

Wow. This is blowing my mind. I didn’t realize how much my chest ascender was limiting movement in my shoulders. And I literally packed up all my gear, drove home, started getting eggs from the chickens and realized I was still wearing this.

Not to mention it serves its intended purpose flawlessly.

it’s the little things idnt it :)

Another stolen idea that I have yet to try is to use a fifi hook for tending. It is a big wall aid climbing hook that I had never heard of till I went to an aerial rescue class that Rich Hattier was teaching. He had one tethered to the upper of his harness for tending. Slips in to tend slips right out when you sit back after ascending. Thanks for the reminder to order one. I'm now going to borrow your idea and zip tie it to my tending buff and give it a try.
