natural crotch fishing pole

just came up with this idea today... working with one block on a dead (symplastless) tulip... short notice.. short handed.. trying to make the job as easy as possible for the two ground men... keeping the block out on the limb helped a lot with the LZ... used this configuration to take out the top of the spar, maybe 10-12' of wood..

Nice.

Hard to tell what's keeping the line from slipping out of the crotch.

Sure you know already, but you won't take advantage of the full stretch of the rope this way as the crotch cuts it off at that point. Always better to use another block (or X Rigging Sling) in place of the crotch. But that was clever thinking in a pinch. Probably would've snapped that limb without it.

There was a little nub, (see in pic) that was just enough to keep the line in... the other blocks were parked up the hill... just wanted to save a few minutes there, without burdening the ground guys....

Wow you came up with that idea today all on your own. I am amazed! Worst part is you took the time to take this lame pic but didn't take the time to send someone back to the truck for another block?

actually , just asking , it looks like you could have run the line behind the stub and had the same back up with less friction . Or is it a bad camera angle ?

Looks like a bad example, the little nub gives little security and once the sh*t hits the fan the top would have broken out easily caused by a lot of extra rope in the system that would have make the impact bigger and the possibility of keeping it dynamic for the groundies less.

Sometimes you have to rethink your action and go for a safer and sometimes different setup even though you allready installed it and invested time in it.

To much things can go wrong here, just lokking at the pic.
Maybe just like riggs and jeff I could be wrong but then the camera angle is really off.

Climb safe and think twice

I would have hung a medium porty or BMS belay spool on that tip, reducing the forces outright, and only run the line down through the fork to keep it in line with the spar.

tough to tell in 2-d, and that's the only set up that would have worked without taking a full wrap under the limb.. stub was enough, though I would have set the block on the main stem if there was anything valuable below.. there was a bed with a few small shrubs and some ornamental grass.. low value targets.. just having a little fun w something new

I wouldn't be so bold as to say that's the "only set up" that would have worked. By hanging a porty or BMS there, the wrap(s) could be placed there, again reducing the dynamic forces, versus the compounding effect of the block with friction device below.

Just running the rope through the crotch like riggs described would be the most logical alternative to not having another block, clevis, xxr sling, ect.

hopefully you can see from the second pic that it wouldn't have worked.. If not, take my word for it (I was there). ;)
