My VIO POV 1.5 is ... good news - a correction...

The good news update is down there in the posts somewhere.

The correction:
In a post further down, I said I downloaded Nero 9, now I'm not so sure if it's Nero 9 or Nero 2010 and I'm not at home to check what I actually down loaded.

On my home computer:
VIO POV Manager, opens for about 2 seconds, then an error message appears to the effect of: Manager has encountered a problem and must close, sorry for the inconvenience.

I have uninstalled Manager, rebooted, reinstalled Manager and it does the same thing.

MovieMaker
loads a 27 minute clip from the POV recorder to multiple 10 second clips. You can just imagine how many 10 second clips it takes to cover 27 minutes. Then, if that weren't enough, if I drag and drop the clip from my hard drive into MovieMaker I only get the first 10 seconds. And if that were not enough, if I try to save that much, I get a save dialog box for about one second and then it closes, then MovieMaker closes AND the My Computer window I had open to do the drag and drop also closes and NOTHING gets saved.

On a computer at school:
VIO POV Manager takes over 30 minutes to load a 27 minute clip from the recorder, at which time I was so disheartened, I just closed it.

MovieMaker says it can't load the .AVI format because the required codec has not been installed, but search as I can, I cannot find the codec MM is looking for.

I thought I had carefully researched this before I purchased the camera system. I've looked through forums, FAQs, and nothing even alludes to the problems I've seen.

So far it looks like I have a $600 camera system that all I can do with it is record and view raw footage on TV - that's all I can get to work.

And wouldn't you know it, this all happens on a Friday of a long weekend and no one will be available until Tuesday. Oh well, I guess I can record, download (via My Computer) and hope I can find a solution to all this mess Tuesday.

I suppose you can 'hear' my disappointment and frustration.

Re: So far, my VIO POV 1.5 is a complete disaster

Movie maker will ruin your life.
There are endless forums full of people wondering why on earth microsoft wont patch it.

I gave up on it after crashing so many times.
Roxio has the BEST movie edditting software I have used so far. Not to hard...never crashes..quite a few more options than Movie maker too.
As far as the POV goes, I hope you figure it out because I was thinking about buying that same unit (If I ever manage to destroy the one I have now)
goodluck

What helmet cam are you using Jesse, an Oregon Scientific?

Re: So far, my VIO POV 1.5 is a complete disaster

Don't give us the ship just because of software problems. The POV is a fine camera. Well, from what I have viewed and listened to anyway.

My own system is antiquated by todays standards but does fine. And in the beginning I too had a heck of a time getting it work without crashing. But even running sweet it can only transfer video files in real time.

And by the way, video editing should really only be done on a stand-alone system. Much less software problems that way and much faster with the rendering.

Reg Coates may be able to help you out with the POV issues. Luck with it and be patient.

Its a mini DVR that runs to a helmet unit.
It also requites 8 AA batteries so there are 3 things to handle up there.
The maker is Extreme DVR and I got it through an online company caleed helemtcamz.com

I think it was Allmark I was trying to emulate when I got it. I wish I had waited.

Its delicate and overpriced.

Re: So far, my VIO POV 1.5 is a complete disaster

Gerald,

Yeah the POV 1.5 does a good job - looks good on TV, but I cannot get the VIO POV Manager software that comes with the camera to work at all - it won't even open.

MovieMaker doesn't work right with it and crashes on SAVE.

I bought Adobe Premier Element 7 and it won't load the .AVI file produced by POV 1.5 because it says the audio rate in the file is non-standard. I used both the DIVX provided on the CD that comes with the camera - that didn't work - I downloaded the latest DIVX and got the exact same results - non-standard audio rate so it won't load.

BTW, when I import HD .mov files into Adobe Premier - they look awful. When you play the same file in QuickTime the ar sharp and smooth; in Adobe, they are fuzzy and jerky.

I was able to make a DVD of a .mov file using Adobe - quite easy as a matter of fact, but the quality was pathetic.

This seems like such a simple thing - take video, edit video, produce a DVD or YouTube output, but it's anything but simple.

I guess it will be Tuesday (after the Labor Day weekend) before I can get some technical support to see if all this can be resolved.

Right now this is very, very, frustrating. How can it be so complicated? As it stands right now, I have no way to load and view, much less edit, videos made with the POV 1.5 onto my computer. I can watch the raw footage on TV, which looks pretty good.

Re: So far, my VIO POV 1.5 is a complete disaster

The format disk that you have could have some problems or? I have the same camera and it took awhile for me to figure out the process but now it works fine. Good luck with the tech support. If I can help I will sure try..

Re: So far, my VIO POV 1.5 is a complete disaster

You can help perhaps, what software do you use to edit the POV video? What software do you use to make DVDs?

My camera works; it records; I can watch the video on TV, but VIO POV Manager simply will not run. It opens, then shows a box that says it encountered an error and must close.

I'm wondering if my AVG 8.5 anti-virus software is the problem, but as far as I can see, there's no way to turn it off or add VIO POV Manager as a safe program???

Re: So far, my VIO POV 1.5 is a complete disaster

I use Movie Maker to edit. I haven't yet made a DVD.

The anti-virus software could be the problem. Is it possible to try on a labtop without the free virus software?
Also the Divx is all garbage and I haven't used any of it. If or when you can get the video's uploaded to the Manager then you can transfer them to the Movie maker then to YOUTUBE.

Re: So far, my VIO POV 1.5 is a complete disaster

It's all soft ware problems, Ron. Don't give up.

Once you cross the threshold it will all be good.

Of all things don't toss your files.

Looking forward to seeing your work!

Re: So far, my VIO POV 1.5 is a complete disaster

Many thanks guys, I'm not giving up, just frustrated at the moment. Maybe this will be one of those things that I can laugh about when I look back on it.

After I talk to tech support(s), if that doesn't resolve the problems, I'll get my tech guy to take a look at my computer and see if there's something going on there.

It is interesting though, I've tried VIO POV Manager on three different machines and it doesn't work on any of them.

But I will get to the bottom of this.

BTW, Gerald, I gave your DDRT rope walker a test drive last night. Did a 55' climb on it and it worked great! I found that for me, smaller 'steps' is less tiring and produces significantly less stress on my knees than more 'aggressive' steps. I set it up with a cambiem saver instead of a ring to ring friction saver, so it could be even better with the friction saver.

It's not as gear intense as one might think. I did do one thing differently. I used a Petzl Fixe to tend the friction knot, I know - yet another piece of hardware, but it did something unexpected. It keeps the down rope in an efficient mode even when the feet push the rope outward, like when climbing in free air. Seems to be worth the pulley.

Re: So far, my VIO POV 1.5 is a complete disaster

Well, kinda good news. I still can't get the software that came with the POV 1.5 to work, nor will MovieMaker, nor Adobe Premier, but...are you sitting down!!!!

I downloaded a free 15 day trial version of Nero 9 and it seamlessly loads the .avi (from my hard drive), it is very sharp, smooth and clear - just like on TV. The Nero 9 package costs $79.99 and after I explore it some more, I'll likely buy it.

Nero 9 (I may have downloaded Nero 2010; I'll have to check tonight and see what I downloaded) produces great DVDs from the POV .avi clips - I know I just made a dvd and watched it on my TV!

I've still got a lot of exploring to do and learning my way around, but it looks like it does it all - edit, YouTube, add voice/music, storybook layout, movies, stills, etc., etc., etc.

I haven't tried .mov formats yet nor uploading to Nero directly from the camera, but it's suppose to do that. Even if it didn't, all I have to do is copy the clip from the POV to my hard drive - I already know that works!

I'm happy again!

That's NERO 9 - $79.99 - camera to DVD and much, much more!
